This is more than an academic personnel-policy change. The academies are part of the military’s force architecture. If faculty policy materially affects capacity to produce graduates, it eventually becomes a commissioned force management problem too. My students know second-order effects matter. 🙄

Things I was told: * the site is not being updated in real time but if you submitted an updated allocation it has been moved to "disagreements" to trigger a manual review of all potentially conflicting claims * they are planning to review these before Nov payments go out & not just skip them

To recap: There are the Hawks, Hawkeyes, Seahawks, Blackhawks, RedHawks and Jayhawks. All different teams. In case it comes up, there are Cardinals in both Arizona and St. Louis. Not to be confused with the Stanford Cardinal, which is in California. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

By flattening everything into a single clean pane of glass, let alone letting AI do the processing on the wicked problems that they’ve been asked to monitor, manage, mitigate, and, if all of that fails, resolve using military power we destroy the whole point of senior leader PME. 5/

Anybody have kids who've done the CIEE summer abroad program? Alternately, are there any teenagers on this website for 38-year-olds who've done the CIEE summer abroad program recently? What were your experiences? Worth doing? Not worth doing? Secret child labor scam? My older kid is interested.

The thing with pitch contests is that you only have a few seconds to grab an agent/editor's attention, so it has to be clear, concise, and show the important points: 1) the protagonist, 2) the plot, and 3) the stakes and why it matters.

The kindest thing you can do for a parent - any parent - is provide trained childcare services in which their small children can learn peer socialisation skills like *sharing* and run around screaming in a safe and appropriate environment.

To put it another way, you can’t just tell your sons they need to take accountability—you need to hold them accountable. Start with small stuff. Don’t shield them for the consequences of their actions. Walk them through the process of doing the wrong thing and turning it into the right thing.

Shortly after my friend started dating her now-husband (25+years) she was going to break up with him because "everyone knows" that a man buys a woman flowers when he takes her to a formal dance and he hadn't. I had to explain this was not a given and that if she needed that she had to let him know.

It's a great baby safety tip.
A large glowing baby in a field. A man, in awe, looks upon the baby. The baby says: Listen closely, friend. My time here is short, because there are a lot of bugs and it smells like swamp. Tell them to lay babies down to sleep on their backs, without blankets or pillows, every time. The man replies, Ok! Thanks, Great Baby!

Why you should use a PHYSICAL scene separator (e.g. asterisks) in your books instead of an empty space: 1) Some ereader / app somewhere may simply not show the empty space. 2) Some people read on devices with the text REALLY BIG. Your chance of the empty space being at the end of the screen is...

About a month ago one of the guys I run into at the dog park spent about twenty minutes telling me how he really didn't like his dog but was keeping it in the divorce because it had chosen him as its person. It was the most bizarre conversation. Like, "Why do you want me to know this?"

Any time we hear "AI did this and this", it's not proof programs are becoming sentient, but that the humans deploying said AI did this (which is generally failing to deploy proper sandboxing measures to prevent an AI from going against security) It's not the AI that's rogue, it's the company

Although, I will say that 10% thing has been happening for ages at least on an individual basis. I first paid for my own health insurance in 2010. It was $110 a month. I stayed on the same plan and it went up by 10% every year until I took a day job. By the end it was $330 a month.

I figure the AI companies are pushing this rogue AI narrative because they're trying to get the government to take them over and pay them off because they know the bubble is about to burst and don't want to be caught holding the ball. (Probably conspiracy theory, but maybe not.)
