Please stop saying “lockdowns.” There were never true lockdowns in the US, and it fuels far right narratives to repeat this inaccurate statement. You can say closures, you can say restrictions, or better, you can say public health measures which saved many lives.

NCTE has just summarily killed a 77-year-old organization that has shaped how writing is understood, taught, and learned, in higher education in particular. No member involvement. No transparency. No process to speak of. With friends and fellow educators like these, I guess who needs enemies.

I feel like digital humanities was this great 15 year moment of techno-optimism that created solid resources and showed how old media connected to new media. Whereas AI is going to introduce a period of techno-cannibalism designed to devour digital humanities labor and anyone else in its proximity.

It’s not being treated as bigger news because it’s being framed as a vendor breach. The story is structural: 9,000 schools share a single point of failure they don’t control. Educational infrastructure has been quietly privatized, and the failure mode is now an active extortion crew.

I am broken-hearted at the terrible news that my alma mater, @hampshirecollege.bsky.social, after 56 yrs, is closing. Its death is a victory for conformism, for corporatism, for higher education's dull love of hierarchy & status. It's a grievous defeat for imagination & experimentation.

Many get sick while traveling. One major reason is they don’t realize mass transit is high risk because airline CEOs lied about viral spread early in the pandemic and lobbied the CDC to lower precautions. To make the most of your holiday, take precautions like wearing a mask when you travel!

This whole section really.
Finally: AI cannot do your job, but an AI salesman can 100% convince your boss to fire you and replace you with an AI that can't do your job, and when the bubble bursts, the money-hemorrhaging "foundation models" will be shut off and we'll lose the AI that can't do your job, and you will be long gone, retrained or retired or "discouraged" and out of the labor market, and no one will do your job.
AI is the asbestos we are shoveling into the walls of our society and our descendants will be digging it out for generations:
