People often defend Grammarly when I lump them in with the rest of the LLM crowd, but this is why: their model of consent is no better than OpenAI's or Anthropic's.

I still remember working at a major company in 2022 that had a policy that read, "There is no way to use Grammarly and comply with the terms of your NDA," so they blocked the site entirely at the IP level from the internal VPN. That's when I quit using it personally, too. 😬

It is difficult (impossible) to see how you could justify using Grammerly if you're doing research with people that requires consent to share information. Even a small potential risk of a participant who was supposed to be anonymous having their info revealed by Grammarly is enough to disqualify it.
