Finished the website for our fall Public Study class on alternative schools, radical pedagogy, and learning communities! Need to fix one little technical glitch in the chronological session listing and upload my intro lesson with theoretical framing :) crc.metro.org/course/publi...

The people who do care about the difference would scold that “sci-fi” is a pejorative term for science fiction and to always use its full government name or SF for short. Then they would tell you why Margaret Atwood hurts their genre/general feelings.

Please stop saying “lockdowns.” There were never true lockdowns in the US, and it fuels far right narratives to repeat this inaccurate statement. You can say closures, you can say restrictions, or better, you can say public health measures which saved many lives.

NCTE has just summarily killed a 77-year-old organization that has shaped how writing is understood, taught, and learned, in higher education in particular. No member involvement. No transparency. No process to speak of. With friends and fellow educators like these, I guess who needs enemies.

My daughter was 7 when the original Frozen came out, and we saw it opening weekend. In the climactic scene when Anna saves Elsa from the sword, an adult man yelled out “GANSTA!” at the top of his lungs.

I feel like digital humanities was this great 15 year moment of techno-optimism that created solid resources and showed how old media connected to new media. Whereas AI is going to introduce a period of techno-cannibalism designed to devour digital humanities labor and anyone else in its proximity.

Thanks. There are still a lot of ups and downs, especially as she is now a young adult learning how to be independent with a variety of chronic illnesses. But she’s had some amazing care, including a gifted GI who suspected SMAS right off the bat, while many wait years.

My kid developed ARFID after having SMAS—a severe intestinal compression that causes agonizing pain and vomiting. SMAS typically requires tube feeding and after her tube was removed her drs wanted to treat her eating aversions as anorexia. So grateful I found an ARFID specialist dietitian.

It’s not being treated as bigger news because it’s being framed as a vendor breach. The story is structural: 9,000 schools share a single point of failure they don’t control. Educational infrastructure has been quietly privatized, and the failure mode is now an active extortion crew.

I am broken-hearted at the terrible news that my alma mater, @hampshirecollege.bsky.social, after 56 yrs, is closing. Its death is a victory for conformism, for corporatism, for higher education's dull love of hierarchy & status. It's a grievous defeat for imagination & experimentation.

Many colleges have their own separate supplement to their regular application for homeschooled students. My kid landed on her feet and is currently in college, but I cannot overstate how much extra work it is for students and parents to move from homeschool to college.

Preparing all the paperwork to show the homeschooling curriculum and evaluations was daunting, and I work in higher education. There are so many hoops to jump through for a college applicant who is not in school or doesn’t have a HS diploma in hand.

I didn’t get past the paywall, but if the hypothesis is that it will help college admissions for kids growing up in NY, they have absolutely no clue. My daughter had to drop out of school in her junior year for medical reasons. The home instruction program had challenges that made it a bad fit. 1/

Many get sick while traveling. One major reason is they don’t realize mass transit is high risk because airline CEOs lied about viral spread early in the pandemic and lobbied the CDC to lower precautions. To make the most of your holiday, take precautions like wearing a mask when you travel!
