Cripple
And if you are disabled, and even if you're not right now, there will come a time in your life where you become a Cripple. A being built of rage and bitterness and love and compassion. Vexed and spiteful, surging and furious, as an until now calm ocean amidst a fierce hurricane.
A life of languishing in the margins.
Gabapentin and Naltrexone and Baclofen and Ambien and Lamotrigine and Tramadol.
Barely scraping by on mutual aid, perpetually looking for a curb cut, forever unable to access the top floor of that one shop, because they only have stairs. The Cripple. The one whose joints creak like a door hinge in a shed that has stood for generations. The one they call wheelchair bound, ignoring the fact that you are not imprisoned, but rather freed. Those whose collection of canes with bespoke prints could feed the gaping maw of an art gallery for a month. You who are perpetually fatigued, and yet still find the energy to love beyond all reason.
A Cripple is furious, and of otherworldly beauty when measured by the soul. Their work ethic exceeds the rest of the world by orders of magnitude, and all that energy and tenacity is spent nearly exclusively on remaining alive. This will be you one day. Your body will ache, your joints and spine and brain will fuck themselves up horribly, and your medication list will rival a fantasy novel in length. And at that time, you will be happy that you fought for us.

We simply know
A digital comic page depicting Anton, a white unicorn trans man, sitting naked surrounded by peacock butterflies.

Panel 1: Anton sits holding a caterpillar, surrounded by grown butterflies. The narration says “A question that is often asked of people like us is ‘How do you know?’”

The narration says “I’ve mulled it over for years. I’ve never arrived at an answer.”

Panel 2: A peacock butterfly cocoon is hanging from a branch. The narration says “How does a caterpillar know it must cocoon and become a butterfly?”

Panel 3: Anton’s hand holds a grown peacock butterfly. The narration says “It simply does. That is enough.”

GDT's reddit AMA spitting fire www.reddit.com/r/movies/com...
reddit comment:

Hello! Did you intend the ending of Pan’s labyrinth to be real or in Ofelia’s mind?

Guillermo Del Toro's reply:

My interpretation, and it's exclusively mine, is that it's real.

Because there's two things. One is what people call “The Shining Question.” The Shining Question is, Who opens the door for Jack to get out of the fridge? And Ofelia is in an attic with a guard outside her door, and she draws the door with the magic chalk, and she shows up in the labyrinth. So, the only way she could have gone into the labyrinth is the magic chalk. And the flower is real at the end. The flower that blooms in the dead tree. And the reason I think it’s real is because—and this is why I'm in favor of the human factor in art—I think that art does transform the world. You know?

Think about it for a second. One of the goals, with all this movement, is to make you believe that art is vulgar. That art is nothing special, and anybody can do art. That is like me telling you that I'm faster at running than Usain Bolt but I “run” in my motorcycle. Well, that's not the same. That’s not the same at all.

Art is important, and they want you to believe it isn't. It's part of the idea of control. The goal is not to have artificial intelligence. The goal is to foster natural stupidity. The goal is to foster you not looking for answers, and to trust yourself entirely to an engine. Look at the way we are dipping our toes into these things. We are starting to ask the machine, Is this true? For now, there's a correlation between reality and what the answers of the machine are. For now. But soon, we won't even investigate further. We will be told it's true. And if the machine is in the hands of somebody who should not be trusted, then your reality has been completely and utterly fucked. Because your intelligence ends at the question. You don't seek the answer. It's given to you.Q: You recently mentioned that AI creates 'semi-compelling screensavers' and that you'd 'rather die' than use it. As a filmmaker who relies heavily on practical effects and creature design, what do you think is the biggest thing lost when a computer generates an image instead of a human hand?

GDT:

The three quarters of the process that gave you the chance to think of the idea that people don't think about without that process. Meaning, AI can get you to the middle really fast, but there's a dialectic with the process that gets you to that top 10%. I'll give you an example with the Pale Man.

We sculpted it as an old man, with a face. And then I said, Let's take out the face. This happened because I saw a photo of a manta ray and the poster for Don Coscarelli’s Phantasm. That combination, which happened at two different times during a week or a month, are not permutations that are chemically part of an equation. They are alchemy. And then I said, Take out the face, and then I said, Let's put the eyes on the hands. This triangulation happens because I spent a month or two months living with the idea of this creature. And it's not linear.

AI is like a super-fast engine that makes semi-sentient permutations of things that are already done. Creation is things that have never been done. Coming to exist.

And the second thing is the loss of the apprenticeship that one has as an artist. You're never a master; you're always an apprentice. This is a kinship I have with, for example, Chris Nolan. When he showed me The Odyssey, there’s a scene when Matt Damon is floating in the stormy ocean and I asked him—because we were talking about practical effects, and how great it is and that we both always use a maquette or a model—and I asked him, How did you do it? He said, “We put him in a storm in the ocean.”

And you're gonna find that 30% of a great image occurs accidentally. You know, either a drop of water hits the lens, or the camera shakes. I remember when in 1993, '94, Jim…

Here's everything posted publicly so of my new comic, The Boy From Venus! (1/5)
A closeup of the scowling face of a NEET girl with dark hair, messy bangs, round glasses, and a warm-grey sweatshirt. Reflected in her glasses is a person with shoulder-length sharp light-brown hair, wearing a white blouse, a blue bubble skirt, and black short-heeled shoes, and in a cute horizontal pose grabbing the back of one of the legs (like if you were putting on pants while leaning back onto a bed) smiling and surrounded by stars.Panel 1: A girl with with melly black ponytailed hair is sitting in a messy room at a computer in the dark, playing a video game. She is saying "GET ON THE OBJECTIVE, WHAT'RE YOU DOING??"

Panel 2: She grits her teeth as, in the headphones in the voice chat, voices say stuff like "STUPID B*TCH", "WHAT'S YOUR ONLYFAMS?" and "GET OUT OF QUEUE AFTER THIS AND GET BACK TO THE KITCHEN"

Panel 3: She throws down her headphones, her face grimaced with anger and she stands off her chair, toppling it, and yells "rrrrrRRRFUCKING ... MOIDS!!" She wears round glasses, has messy bangs, and has a small mole on the left side of her face. She wears a grey sweatshirt and grey sweatpants.

Panel 4: Her glasses seem to reflect fire as she yells "I PRAY FOR THE DAY WHEN HUMAN CLONING IS VIABLE AT SCALE AND WE CAN FINALLY SAY GOODBYE TO THESE EVOLUTIONARY DEAD ENDS!!!"Panel 5: She calms down a bit, huffing, as more of her room is revealed. Her floor is littered with junk food packaging and she's got an exposed mattress with no cover.

Panel 6: She says "I'm hungry. I should hit up the corner store for a snack."

Panel 7: She remembers the cute girl who works the register, with shoulder-length hair and a green apron, and says "At least there's a GIRL working there now."

Panel 8: She thinks about a golden-retriever-esque orange haired buff guy at the register instead, and says "And not that SMOOTHBRAIN MOID that was working there before as a summer job."Panel 9: Her eyes go wide and her mouth goes beak-like as she says "OH! I wonder if she's based? ..." and thinks "I should test her."

Panel 10: The NEET girl is standing at the register at the convenience store, buying a soda, and energy drink, and a bag of chips. The clerk, that cute girl she remembered, says "Hey there~ Another late night gaming sesh?"

Panel 11: The NEET girl rubs her hands together nervously and replies "Oh, um, yeah, haha. So uh ... How 'bout them moi--, how 'bout them MEN, huh?"

Panel 12: The clerk, confused, looks at her wide-eyed and says "huh?"

Once you start noticing how the incapacity to handle discomfort affects how people live their lives it's actually pretty shocking how it ruins pretty much every conceivable aspect of existence. Interpersonal relationships, romantic and platonic. Career and education opportunities. Your politics Your willingness to go anywhere. The kind of food you eat. The kind of art you expose yourself to and your ability to read it. It's never just one thing, it touches everything, and once you notice it it's like suddenly being able to see germs or something. Just this horrific catastrophe people look at you askance for screaming about. As I grow older and see what became of my friends and peers who could not learn to handle discomfort, the more I'm like. Emotional regulation requires energy!! When you're physically tired, emotional regulation is simply physiologically harder to achieve.

So if you've used all your physical spoons and you start crying because you dropped a pen, remember it's because your cells literally don't have enough ATP to coordinate the neurological processes that control your emotions. Give yourself grace and rest and probably a snack.
