It's World Homeless Day, and I'll just say: Homelessness isn't some great unsolvable mystery. People are homeless because they don't have homes. This suffering persists not for lack of solutions, but because enormous wealth and power are invested in maintaining the very structures that produce it.

The right wing crash out over asian students celebrating at a UT football game reveals that all along the true goal of reactionary colorblindness was never “meritocracy” but resegregation. (Gift link) www.theatlantic.com/ideas/2026/1...
Color-blind meritocracy was, for many years, a successful rhetorical strategy for undermining antidiscrimination law and excluding Black people from selective schools and prominent positions. That’s why so many former segregationists seemed to suddenly embrace the concept in the 1970s. For them, resegregation—not color-blindness—was always the goal. As long as the success of some immigrants could be used to paint Black students as undeserving, color-blind meritocracy was good. But now many on the right see a new problem: too many Asian Americans in elite spaces. Their success, therefore, must be portrayed as a sinister theft of real (white) Americans’ birthright.

The declining “social trust” that the administration warned against is, of course, not the fault of these students. The problem is bigots like Bo French who cannot accept into their community people who do not share their race and religion, and those who monetize or otherwise profit from that bigotry by spreading it through social media. Like the proverbial child who kills their parents and asks for mercy as an orphan, they are responsible for the problem they are decrying.

300,000 tons of diesel is something like 2.25 million barrels, which is considerably less than what the U.S. goes through in a single day (~4.0 million barrels). I assume he chose the bizarre unit of "tons" rather than the more familiar barrels to mask this fact.

1) Putin doesn't have diesel to spare. 2) Diesel is cover for lifting sanctions. 3) Putin's statement sounds like he's offering an Iran escape hatch, which I've been predicting. 4) Half of the MASSIVE bribes Putin is offering now don't exist. 5) But he does mention security coop -- Kash.

Great @marisakabas.bsky.social interview w/Steven Hale of the Nashville Banner, who served as a media witness to the botched execution of Christa Pike. Having to witness state-sponsored murder is heavy; and then witnessing that murder fail not once but twice? www.thehandbasket.co/p/christa-pi...
MARISA KABAS, THE HANDBASKET: How many people have you witnessed being executed?

STEVEN HALE, THE NASHVILLE BANNER: So this was my fifth execution where I've been a media witness in Tennessee—I guess only three of those have ended with a person actually being killed. Oddly enough, I was a witness at the Tony Carruthers execution in May here, which was called off because of issues placing IV lines. And then of course this recent one. So five times, but two of them have been rather unusual.

Christa Pike’s attorneys have just released an update on her condition. Full release here:
UPDATE ON CHRISTA PIKE’S CONDITION

Statement from Randy Spivey and Kelly Gleason from the TN Office of the Post Conviction Defender, and Stephen Ferrell and Luke Ihnen from Federal Defender Services of Eastern Tennessee, attorneys for Christa Pike

The turnaround in Christa Pike’s health in the last three days has been profound and a credit to the medical team caring for her. She woke up from unconsciousness Tuesday morning (Oct. 6) and began taking limited steps Wednesday afternoon (Oct. 7). Today, she is walking with some assistance, and her arms—which sustained significant injuries during the execution attempt—are healing and regaining movement and strength. Her lungs are clear, and she has started to eat a regular diet. Physicians are encouraged by her physical recovery.

While her physical recovery has been remarkable, significant questions remain about the long-term effects of what she endured. Christa is dealing with the profound psychological trauma of having survived a failed execution, including the terror, pain and uncertainty of believing she was about to die. We cannot yet know the full emotional and psychological toll of that experience or how long it will take her to begin to heal. Even as she struggles to process what has happened, she continues to express concern for others, particularly the family of her victim Colleen Slemmer.

Christa also continues to experience cognitive challenges with concentration and memory. Her physicians have cautioned that it may take months to fully understand whether she sustained lasting cognitive injuries.

Christa committed her crime at just 18 years old after a childhood marked by rape, sexual violence, physical abuse and neglect. Later into her incarceration, Christa was finally properly diagnosed and treated for bipolar disorder and PTSD caused by her upbringing.

Christa has endured more than enough. We continue to call on Gov. Lee to commute her death sentence to life in prison without the possibility of parole. She should never be subjected to another execution attempt.

This is what I said before about RFK Jr. wanting to use our tax money for the unethical study in Guinea-Bissau, in which they will experiment on infants from one of the poorest countries in the world by withholding the HepB birth dose. My opinion hasn’t changed. www.theguardian.com/society/2025...
The US canceled much of its global aid and research earlier this year, Jacobs said.
"In the face of the US canceling all this funding for vulnerable countries, and then it's still going to pay for this research to be done - that is really worrying" she said. "It seems to say we don't value your lives enough to continue to provide support overall, but we won't hesitate to experiment with your population."
