the reason “AI will create so much abundance we will have a utopian society” rhetoric falls so flat is that the people building it will never, ever share their bounty unless it is taken from them and we all know it

A Red-rumped parrot pauses for a moment to drink from Christina Stead Pond in Franklin, Canberra. #photography #AustralianBirds
This is a male Red-rumped Parrot. His colours are particularly bright, because it's Spring here. He's a blue-green parrot overall, with blackish tips of his wings, and a red back and base of his tail. He's perched at water level on a dead branch that emerges from the pond's water. His black beak is making round ripples, as is the very tip of his tail which is dipped in the water.

After a bit of a break, I took a trip out to ponds in Franklin yesterday. Birding is wonderful right now, lots of baby birds and nesting activities. Many human Canberrans were also out enjoying the sun and reacting with delight to having baby birds pointed out to them. #photography #AustralianBirds
A family of Black Swans walking up a grassy incline, with a Casurina tree in the background. There are two adults with four cygnets total. Three in the front and one trailing behind the parents. The adults are large black birds with long curved necks. They have bright red beaks with white tips. The cygnets are a medium grey with dark grey bills and very fluffy looking. They're already the size of normal ducks and they have a lot of growing to do. This group was moving up to take advantage of the mowing that was just done to find cut grass and weeds to eat. Later they moved back down into the pond as people with dogs (on leashes, thanks Canberrans!) walked along the path.A Willie Wagtail sits on top of a sign that says "DANGER SHALLOW WATER". The bird seems unimpressed. In the background are some blurry tree branches. The Willie Wagtail is a black bird with a white chest and a stern white eyebrow. It was also taking advantage of the recent mowing to nab insects just above the newly short grass. They are very agile fliers.

The image is of a four panel comic.
In panel one, we see a man sitting at a restaurant table. He is sweating. He says "Y-you have beautiful eyes".
The second panel zooms in on the man's face. He says, "I'm sorry. I'm just so nervous."
In panel three we see that a biblically accurate angel is sitting on the other side of the table.
In panel four we zoom in on the angel's face, who says "BE NOT AFRAID".

One of the delights of taking photos is finding details that were invisible to the naked eye: like a female White-throated Treecreeper's little red ear covers, or her extravagantly curved claws. And discovering the second bird was a male: yes claws, no red ears. #photography #AustralianBirds
A female white throated treecreeper perched on the side of gum tree with silvery white, smooth bark. Behind her is another similar tree. She's a small bird with a sharp straight beak and mostly dark grey above. She has a white throat, as you'd expect, and her lower body has a panel of white spots on dark grey below her wings. She has a dark eye, and just below that in this picture, you can see a faint reddish patch which is her red ear covers. She's hanging on with claws which are almost as long as her toes and which are strongly curved and look very sharp. The claws support her slight weight as she creeps (hops) up and down trees looking for insects to eat. This photo was taken in a forest near North Canberra Hospital in Bruce, Canberra. A male white-throated treecreeper perched on the side of tree with rough, furrowed, dark brown bark. Behind him is a tree with silvery white, smooth bark. He's a small bird with a sharp straight beak and mostly dark grey above. He has a white throat, as you'd expect, and his lower body has a panel of larger white spots on dark grey below his wings. He has a dark eye, and unlike the female, he does not have red ear covers. He's hanging on with claws which are almost as long as is toes and which are strongly curved and look very sharp. The claws support his slight weight as he creeps (hops) up and down trees looking for insects to eat. This photo was taken in a forest near North Canberra Hospital in Bruce, Canberra, a couple of hundred metres away from the female treecreeper was photographed.

My latest favourite bird photos. I only recently realised that it doesn't matter if it rains the whole time, or if I only take four decent shots, I have never, ever regretted just getting out in nature to take bird photos. #nature #AustralianBirds #photography
A black and white photo of an Australasian Coot in a pond. Ripples radiate around the bird which is completely black with a white beak and shield. Some droplets of water are visible on the coot which has just come up from a dive. The rest of these photos are in colour. This one is of a very small olive and buff bird with white rings around its eyes, hence the name, a Silvereye. The bird is percted on a twig of golden wattle which is Australia's national flower. This wattle has bright yellow puffs of flowers and fern like leaves. The Silvereye is facing the camera and has just taken a beak full of pollen from a flower. It's framed by another larger twig which is brown. The background is blurred. Silvereyes are small birds that move unbelievably quickly, rarely pausing. I’d been chasing a few separate flocks of them around the tops of this forest, but they’re so tiny and quick that I didn’t have a clear shot. But while I was trying to photograph a pigeon on the ground, more Silvereyes arrived in the trees above my head and flew and hopped down to feed on these wattle flowers. This bird was maybe two metres away when I took this photo. This photo was taken late in the afternoon at my nearby wetlands. It has been a few months since I've seen a Nankeen Night Heron in this area, so this was a happy find. I probably wouldn't have noticed this small stocky heron if I didn't see it land exactly in this spot and stay there. The bird has a black cap with two wacky white plumes curving from the back of its head. The lower face and head are a rich brown, fading to a buff underside. It has longish yellow legs. It has a large brown eye and a black and yellow beak. The bird is perched in a Casurina and is partially obscured by a branch just above its legs. The background shows how overcast and dim the day was. These birds are called night herons because that's when they're most active. But they can also be found at twilight, foraging in shallow fresh water. A male Flame Robin perched atop a flower spike on top of Percival Hill in Gungahlin, Canberra. The bird looks very like a robin should, black head and back with a white stripe on the wings. His chest is very bright red, perhaps even orange, fading to whiter on his underside. The photo was taken on a bright sunny day and the ground beneath his perch is rough with grass and other ground cover. In the blurry background is the suburb of Crace, though no details can be made out. This photo was taken on a Canberra Birds walk.

This male Eastern Grey Kangaroo was unbothered by our group of birdwatchers walking past, but the two Brown-headed Honeyeaters perching on him were more skittish. #photography #AustralianBirds
An adult male Eastern Grey Kangaroo lies on his side in some very brown grass and weeds. His butt is towards us, and his face and ears are pointed vaguely towards the camera. He looks lazily interested in what we're doing. Near his rear end are two Brown-headed Honeyeaters in flight. The top bird is faced towards the left and has a dark brown head with a paler eyebrow visible. Its body and wings are greeny-yellow. Closer to the ground is a second honeyeater is flying flatter and moving faster towards the right. It has similar colours to the other bird. This photo was taken on a walk with Canberra Birds at Percival Hill in Gungahlin, Canberra, Australia.

Went on a wonderful walk with the Canberra Birds group today to the Mount Taylor Nature Reserve. These Sulphur-Crested Cockatoos, aka cockies, were playing in the morning sun. #AustalianBirds #photography
A group of Sulphur-crested Cockatoos on a dead branch against a perfectly clear light-blue sky on a sunny winter morning. These cockatoos are large white parrots with dark beaks. They have a lemon-coloured crest of feathers on their heads and under their wings is visible a similar pale yellow. They look like a collection of clowns and every one of them (there are nine of them) is doing something different. Starting from the top, there's one with both wings open, flying down. One next to it staring right at it. The one under them has its crest all the way up and wings half open. Under that is one with its crest up, staring vaguely at the camera. To its left is another with its crest up, looking downwards. Just below them is probably my favourite, a cocky perched on the end of another little branch, staring towards the camera with its crest up and its head on a quizzical angle. Under that is three next to each other on the bottom of the image: one's looking down, crest up; one's looking up, wings open and pointed upwards; the third is mostly obscured, but you can see its wings open behind the other two. One of the Canberra Birds experts worked out the reason these birds were so riled up. There was a Brown Goshawk to camera left which was bothering them and making them nervous. Within a few minutes one of the bravest of the cockies approached it and led the group's charge to scare the raptor away.

Walked around Gossan Hill Nature Reserve recently and identified many different birds, even in the middle of the (winter) day. Spotted this cute little Striated Thornbill gathering fibres for nest building. As always, details in the alt text. #AustralianBirds #photography
All four of these images are of a Striated Thornbill, a new bird for my list which is always exciting. It's a small mostly brown bird, with a buff underside and striations (short darker stripes) on its face and crown. The legs and feet are dark brown. The tree bark is fuzzy with pale brown fibres which look like they've been stripped by other birds. In this first shot, the bird is about to take a beak full of fibres and is standing sideways on the tree trunk. In the background is a pale blue sky and some twigs and leaves. This image shows the same bird on the same tree (see the first image for more details). This shot shows the bird's dark eye and the striations on its face very clearly. It's now standing towards the other side of the tree, and has some fibres in its bill. This image shows the same bird on the same tree (see the first image for more details). It's back on the right hand side of the trunk, and we can only see its back. There are even more fibres in the bird's beak. The bird's crown has the same darker striations as the face from this angle. This image shows the same bird on the same tree (see the first image for more details). This final image shows the bird about to leave, I think. It's even higher on the right hand side of the trunk and only one of its feet is touching the tree. it has a beak full of light brown fibres and clearly shows the striations on its face and chest. It flitted away shortly after this, hopefully to go turn those fibres into a warm, safe place to lay eggs and raise a new family of little brown birds.
