this Is why frats use extreme hazing at rush and initiation — to select OUT anyone who would potentially speak out or up. They select for boys who are so desperate to belong that they will high-five their own abuse first, then anything else that follows.

A man asked me last night what publishing needs to do for literary fiction to begin appealing to men again. I said, as nicely as I could, that, with over 2,000 books published every Tuesday, of which many would appeal to men, it’s not a publishing problem, it’s a men problem.

One of the reasons I so greatly dislike the “can men and women be friends?” nonsense (yes, full stop, shut up) is that it casts suspicion on people with opposite-sex friends instead of where it more often belongs: on people with no opposite-sex friends.

I’m seeing posts from people (outside of MN) about how US citizens should carry their passports. And let me say that *inside* MN, we are calmly responding to requests with: “No, I don’t have to show you any documentation.” Because that’s how you protect everyone, regardless of immigration status.

"she doesn't deserve the hate directed at her" is where you should have stopped! No one, including her, is saying she exercised good judgment. The question is whether her entire life needed to fall apart for going to first base with her boss a single time.

"Hurt people hurt people" is sometimes accurate, but "people who have been raised to see themselves as superior to others, have been given immense power over other people's lives, and have never had to face consequences for their actions, hurt people" is a lot more broadly true.

Beyond sad. The computer does not know why YOUR child, a unique individual human being, is laughing. Wondering why your child does the weird thing children do, which is part of figuring out what brings them joy and who they are as a human being, is one of the true joys of existence.

Noori Ali
Do you recall Noori Ali(?), the ten year. old Yemeni girl who got herself divorced? I met her at the Glamour awards last year. There was a CNN story last few days about how unhappy she is, still living at home, not attending school and quite angry that her life is not better. Is there any way we can help her? Could we get her to the US for counselling and education?
