BUT: there are numerous websites out there that explain to people (a) what the different classifications of lawyers are and (b) what the history is. Those websites are being picked up and regurgitated (sometimes incorrectly!) by AI bots that aren't considering what jurisdiction it comes from.

In the US, we just use the term generally to mean all lawyers, although there are times where linguistically we reach for "lawyer" and other times we reach for "attorney" and you'll find lawyers doing this and not really asking why.

The use of the word "attorney" (which originally meant someone appointed to represent someone else) has varying meaning among these countries. Some barely use it at all. Some use it, but only as a term of art in specific circumstances (for instance, referring to people with specific specialties.)

In the US, we sorted things out with a Great Flattening of Everything. We just have one court (mostly; there are exceptions) not courts of equity versus law. We don't have specific forms for complaints any more.

The word "attorney" is Norman; the word "lawyer" is Anglo-Saxon. There were courts of law and equity and ALL OF IT WAS A FUCKING MESS. Everyone who inherited this tradition--whether it be England, Canada, Australia, the US, or any other poor fools--has sorted it out in slightly different ways.

To understand why we have two words in the US that mean the same thing, we need to understand that the British legal system--which we inherited--was a fucking mess in multiple ways. There were practices derived from Anglo-Saxon traditions. There were practices derived from Norman traditions.
