Proud to be Lib Dem councillor for Leamington Lillington. Still furious about the stupidity called Brexit.

And efforts to distinguish between FoM & immigration in 2016 onwards were not only a total failure but also created division in the progressive & pro-EU causes. You want (or need, to rejoin) to sell FoM, you need to sell immigration more widely.

RETVRN to lib dem parliamentarians having at least a passing knowledge of what liberalism is FOR, because if they don't know, how can they communicate it to voters? Once again the conflation of liberalism (noble, clear, beautiful) with centrism (hollow, rudderless, horrid) is making me angry :(

I suspect it will make him double down on stuff. Some should be good - being outspoken on criticising Trump. Some will probably be bad - advocating for fuel duty cut. As you say, it would seem better to me to concentrate on getting several next gen MPs ready to step up.

I would guess (as an outside observer, so large pinch of salt required) that the supporters of the motion wont care as they will want to get one of their own elected as leader.

I fear that another factor is the reduction in teaching of foreign languages, especially at A Level. Though I suppose that is somewhat offset by how ubiquitous English is in lots of EU countries now.

Citizenship should never have been allowed to become a conditional and impermanent gift from the state to the individual. It is a permanent status, universal and equal to all that have it, that brings obligations of care and protection *from* the state as well as to it.

There are two ways to sort this - perhaps BOTH need to be implemented. By far the best is to introduce short primary legislation to restore the position of trans people in the Equality Act. The second is to recognise that the promotion of womens’ (or anyone’s) rights is a matter for all.

Ironically there are “legitimate concerns” you could have about warehousing the unfortunate asylum seekers on a rural military base - it’s not suitable accommodation and will do nothing for their wellbeing or integration or the local community- but acting as if they’re a danger is gutter racism.

Agree that mayors are a poor form of devolution, but an English parliament would be too big. We need a system of Regional assemblies with powers similar to the Scottish Parliament. My vote would be to base them around the old TV regions, so they a have an identity and ready-made scrutiny structure.

NEW Why holding a placard is a terrorist act, while causing disruption in a balaclava is not The mess caused by ministers and the police not taking terrorism law seriously By me at @prospectmagazine.co.uk www.prospectmagazine.co.uk/ideas/law/th...

Recent events in England now reveal the practical difference between terrorists and protesters. It would seem that terrorists peacefully hold placards and get immediately arrested, while protesters wear black uniforms and balaclavas and disrupt infrastructure and do not get arrested.

How did we get into this mess? How have we placed ourselves in the position where terrorism legislation is used to detain and prosecute peaceful protesters, while those adopting the terror tactics of private armies seem to be free to do as they wish?

The reason is that for some time British politicians have not taken terrorism legislation seriously, and that ministers have got into the habit of misusing terror laws for easy targets.
