When prepping dinner ingredients, it’s important to have a helper. Thomas Potato has reported for duty.

Today's opening day for Marygold Cyclery at Hamline & Thomas in StP. The shop is beautiful & the vibe is excellent! Exactly how I'd do it. Stop in and buy something--I suggest a King Cage--the last bottle cage you'll ever need.

Sharing my comments from today’s meeting of the City Council, related to the hiring of outside counsel to represent Mayor Her in the lawsuit brought by Chief Henry. The full audio of the meeting is available here: stpaul.legistar.com/View.ashx?M=....
On April 1st of this year, the City was notified by Chief Henry’s attorney that the Mayor was being accused of engaging in illegal conduct toward City employees, and that litigation was reasonably foreseeable.

Today, one day shy of six months later, the City finally saw fit to discuss the matter in a closed door session with this City Council.

In the six months during which the Council and the public have been kept entirely in the dark by the administration, an external law firm has already been engaged at tax payers expense to investigate the allegations of repeated sexual harassment and other inappropriate workplace conduct by the Mayor.

Neither the Council or the public has been informed of the total cost of that investigation. Neither the Council or the public has seen the report.

While vague media reports have circulated that the report will be made public soon, we’re left with the allegations in the Chief’s 73-page complaint and the investigation summary prepared by an employee of the Mayor herself that finds that the Mayor engaged in “offensive and inappropriate behavior,” “created an uncomfortable work environment” for City employees, and “sent inappropriate text messages” to at least two City employees.Today, the Council is effectively being asked to write a blank check with taxpayers’ money to a law firm that, frankly, is a law firm that I take great issue with—just minutes, literally minutes, after this body was provided for the first time was provided with any sort of update related to this matter.

This is no way to run a city. The lack of transparency, the refusal to provide the Council with the information necessary to fulfill our duties as a co-equal branch of government, and the lack of respect for the residents of the City is unacceptable. And yet, as the Council President explained, we effectively have no choice in this matter. If we choose not to retain outside counsel today, then we are opening up the City to additional liability and the risk that the Mayor herself could sue the City for refusing to hire outside counsel.

We are in a horrible position and we have very few options. I am incredibly frustrated by the vote that we are being asked to take today. I am incredibly frustrated by the timeline on which we are being asked to take it and the fact that we will be spending unknown sums of money, significant sums of money, defending against claims we know nothing about—despite the fact that our money has already been used to investigate those very claims.

So while I will vote yes for this resolution today, I want to be very clear about the legal limitations that require, from my perspective, that vote—and the immense frustration and disappointment at being asked to take this vote today.

I am proud to support this important initiative that my colleagues are bringing forward. More cars will not make our streets safer, and protecting workers is non-negotiable. Thank you to my colleagues for leading on this work, I look forward to voting in support of it tomorrow.

Safety alone isn't enough to get more women cycling. Cities must start building cohesive networks connecting the myriad places women need to go. This means looking beyond “Can women cycle safely here?” and asking: “Can women use this network to live their lives?” LISTEN: www.dw.com/en/why-arent...

If you’re curious to try riding in more seasons beyond summer, I *highly* recommend starting to test rainy rides NOW in the fall (or when temps are still in the 50s/60s) before taking on the barely-above-freezing-rain of early winter/spring.

Rainy day? Ride a bike. Most of these parents have to walk 1-2 blocks to their car. Parents who ride bikes get to park feet from the door.
Two cargo trikes (Nihola & Bunch) are parked next to a school. Both bikes have rain covers on. Families are walking behind the bikes with umbrellas.

Someone was a newbie driver or very impaired. There is no way to access that bridge where it isn't obvious it is bikes/pedestrians only 😳

If that driver was very confused and lost, that person probably shouldn't be driving _at all_.

I don't think so. The person who saw it reported it to 311, who apparently referred it to MPD.

Laura G Mitchell @lauragmitchell.com · 29/09/2026
I'd be worried about the sides not being strong enough to handle a car hitting them. Someone else said MPD was not supposed to use the bridge and that they put these barricades in place specfiically to discourage that from MPD.

Laura G Mitchell @lauragmitchell.com · 29/09/2026
It seems like it. The person who shared the photo (who was on a bike) said the driver stopped them to ask how to get out and if they could follow (westbound), but the bicyclist said they didn't think they'd make it out on the west side. So maybe they tried to turn around & go east. So very yikes.

It would surprise me if this bridge is built/rated for car traffic at all (even emergency vehicles)... but admittedly I know nothing about bridges. 😆
110
Laura G Mitchell @lauragmitchell.com · 29/09/2026
I'm trying to imagine an emergency that would require a police vehicle or ambulance to be ON the bridge itself (vs parked at the barricades). Like, for a medical issue wouldn't the paramedics run the stretcher up and bring the person down?

Laura G Mitchell @lauragmitchell.com · 29/09/2026
Last update to the person who spotted it's 311 request was that it was being referred to MPD.

@alexschief.bsky.social do you know if Sabo is designed to accommodate police and emergency vehicles? Like... unless there was an emergency ON the bridge I don't really understand why emergency personnel would drive ON it vs. parking at the bottom and walking up to deal with emergency.

Laura G Mitchell @lauragmitchell.com · 29/09/2026
I'd go so far as to say this is a scary (not just silly) mistake. It seems like they could do some pretty major damage to the bridge trying to get out.

Once I was in line at French Meadow when a woman came in and just started just screaming inarticulate, crazy nonsense at the host. He smiled and nodded politely until the woman blew back outside. I said "yeesh, sorry you have to deal with that kind of thing" and he goes "oh, so that's the owner..."

I'll have to look at the spacing again next time I ride over here but I feel like even a sedan would be a very awkward and tight squeeze. ALSO how did they drive all the way up to the barricades in the first place? It's so clearly not a street for cars from any direction.

Holy shit. Friend of a friend encountered a driver on Sabo Bridge today. Driver apparently seemed very confused and lost. Howwww did they get past the concrete barricades on both ends? (For non Mpls folks: this bridge is bike/ped only & paths up are narrow w/ bollards on both ends.)
