HEkE are things that linger about a person once they're gone.
The pitch of their voice, or how they laughed, which could be in between a gasp and a chuckle. How they always needed to have their music on loud each Saturday morning as they deep-cleaned their home. And especially, all the objects that gave them joy and, in many ways, defined their life.
Horror paperbacks were what brought my mother joy and wonder. When we went on vacation, she'd lug a few old horror novels along, not recent ones. No. My mother preferred paperbacks from the 1970s and 1980s, with yellowed pages and garish covers. I remember going with her to the grocery store when I was little, and there they'd be, by the checkout counter, in a black wire rack that I'd spin around too fast, and she'd tell me to slow down. I would gently stop the spinning display, captivated by those creeping faces and monsters. The images on the front were horrifically whimsical, in this sort of surreal and macabre way, with menacing-looking creatures peering out, or a haunted-look-ing house in the background, begging for someone to enter.
When it came time to decide what to do with my mother's things after she died, I did what many people do, I froze. I sat

One of the more obscure facts I remember about Dolly Parton is this: just like Star Trek would not exist without Lucille Ball, Buffy would not exist without Dolly Parton. She was a silent producer of the movie and show. That's why Buffy Summers has the same birthday as Dolly: January 19.
