(thread up and down for details) #skystorians and other scholars in the UK - is there *anything* available for finishing up historical project or completing a manuscript (that's not limited ot ECRs?). UK funding has always had a novelty vs. maintenance problem...

Lin King, who translated Yang Shuang-zi's #TaiwanTravelogue from Mandarin to English, charges an European publisher for copyright infringement over commissioning a translator who cannot read Mandarin to create a third-language translation using King's English text, original footnotes, and afterword.
How is a translated work distinct from the original work? In literature, there is no such thing as an “objectively accurate” translation. Even this statement you are reading can be translated into millions of word permutations. Language is an imprecise human creation that evolves, imprecisely, over time. This is a concept that the public understands in the context of classical texts like The Odyssey, but less deference is paid to a translator’s creative authority in contemporary literature.

一部翻譯作品,如何與原著是不同的個體?翻譯文學中,並沒有所謂「客觀精準」的標準答案。就連您正在閱讀的這段文字,也能被翻譯成數百萬種用字組合。語言本身就是人類創造的不精準產物,且隨著時間不精準地演化。對於《奧德賽》這類古典作品的不同譯本,大眾似乎都能理解這個概念,但是面對當代文學,譯者的創作自主權卻鮮有對等的尊重。

May 1979. The great misperception. Young Maoists crowd around China’s leaders, unaware that the political world they believed in was already disappearing. Hua would fall; Hu Yaobang ( left) would help Deng dismantle the old order, then be sidelined himself in 1987. Deng remained and transformed China

It was quite interesting that there was a lot of convergence for what students considered a good class policy re 1) transparency if you use any and 2) mostly trying to keep writing itself free of AI generated text (except for grammar fixes)

Katharin Tai 戴恺琳 @ktai.bsky.social · 14/09/2026
Yeah openness was my main motivation - i had the sense that there is shame attached to these questions at times, especially if students assume the policy is a total ban. So i tried to come up with a way of giving them space to be open & hopefully, this can be a foundation for further convos.

Please do, and I'd love to hear how it goes for you! I'm also using it for thinking about assessment design. I originally had the idea because i felt like i just didn't know enough about how students use it or even think about it to make any of these decisions (policies, assessments, any of it)

I did the survey to make a final decision on the AI policy for class & I'm gonna be thinking about these answers for a while. Obviously only a snapshot, but in general, they make me feel a lot more optimistic than I expected, considering the ongoing conversations about this in higher ed.

I taught my first class of the semester today & asked my ~20 students to fill out an anonymous survey on their genAI use & their thoughts on good/bad AI class policies. I'm obv not gonna share any responses, but most were really thoughtful or helped me notice things i just hadn't before.
