Although known to Western science since 1869, the giant panda captured public attention only in 1936. Dubbed the “clown of the zoo,” became a commercial attraction, with mission stations in Sichuan also playing a role. The irony? China’s 30 years of isolation after 1949 may have helped save the panda

During the late Qing dynasty 1900 , wheelbarrows carried both people and goods. Women with bound feet often used them because walking was difficult. For upper-class women, public mobility was also socially restricted, so such transport reflected both physical limits and social convention.

May 1979. The great misperception. Young Maoists crowd around China’s leaders, unaware that the political world they believed in was already disappearing. Hua would fall; Hu Yaobang ( left) would help Deng dismantle the old order, then be sidelined himself in 1987. Deng remained and transformed China

China, 1980s. The city meets the countryside: cars, bicycles and cattle competing for the same road. Reform and Opening unleashed the largest rural-to-urban migration in human history. Hundreds of millions moved, but progress also brought evictions, and a lot of confrontation and protest.

Jiaxing’s Three Pagodas were built three times: in the Tang dynasty’s Zhenguan era (627–649), rebuilt in 1876 and rebuilt again in 2000. This photograph shows the second version. Legends tell of the danger from a white dragon; in reality, the towers warned boatmen of the dangerous bend in the canal.
