cocoon of warmth replaced the aching cold, and after some
consideration, she came to the puzzling conclusion that she’d
been bundled up. Even her head seemed to be on a pillow, a
bizarre, comfortable, and unexpected arrangement. Perhaps
she wasn’taloneafterall,and- She was breathing open atmosphere. Her eyes flew open as she fought her way out of the
blankets, holding her breath until shecould clamp her muzzle
with one hand and cover her nostrils with the other. Streams
of air seethed between her teeth while she frantically
searched the surrounding darkness for the respirator, but it
was nowhere to be found. Her lungs ached, burning and
shrieking to be full again, and long seconds passed in agony
untila flash of reason interrupted her panic. If the contamination had escaped the hangar, she
would already be transformed. That was clearly not the case. She wasalive, thinking, more Caaratiigéthan monster.

over her bare legs and new purple sandals, as if to make fun
of her while she remained locked in fear, and it only made
her moreangry. She had spent too much time preparing for this
moment to befaltering. Maybeit was somethingabout the darkness. Maybeit
was the idea of being deep underground, or maybe it was
just some inexplicable traumatic response to something she
couldn’t recall. The only certainty was that it was bullshit, and
it waskeeping her from following her friends. “It’s just like being in an old school building once
you’re past thescary part,” Marek coaxed gentlyas heknelt in
the soft glow of the stringlights illuminating the way between
the dirt and stones. “Real Cold War era vibes, but nicer. Concrete walls, plenty of light,kindainstitutional.”
“Yeah, I fucking know, dude,” she snapped back, taking a half-step forward. “It’s not as if I’m fighting against
something rational here.”

airlock was just a part of their lives now, something they gave
little thought to besides remembering to brush off before
heading down the hill to the house each evening, but it was

make it accessible since the addition of Marie’s little hut and
door, but that felt like a total afterthought, a priority they
couldn’t seem to make time for in their steadily growing rush
toward departure,and shefelt bad about that. The rain picked up as Amelia’s fists clenched, and she
shuffled forward, gritting her teeth and closing her eyes. Every fiber of her being yearned to move forward and get it
over with, except for one. Her claustrophobia was a taut
stringand every step plucked it with a discordant scream.She
wanted to snip it, tieit off, silenceit forever,and- A bright flash and a massive, deafening blast of
thunder from somewhere close by pushed her into the
underground.She bolted past Marekand Sugélikean animal, clawing her way forward on her hands and knees until she
reached thecenter of the open, welcomingcorridor. Mud and
water dripped off her as she stared into the floor, wide-eyed
and panting. There was something beneath her, a fuzzy, yet
rubbery rectangle framed by her long hair, and after a
moment, she adjusted her wet and warbled glasses to make
sense of the words on it. Wipe Your Paws!

Their pursuers went into afterburn to keep up, but the alien ship left them behind as if they had dropped anchor. They watched in astonishment while the Nehirnis ripped skyward in a joyful roll that twisted the four exhaust columns into a spiral, heading for the upper atmosphere at an unbelievable speed. All that remained in their wake were two blurry pictures, a vast cloud of dust, and an impossible mystery for the witnesses of their passing.$
