Mulder: That’s just it. No one’s on drums! They pushed through industrial then beyond. Beyond credits. One band. One sound. One mind. Neither dance nor punk. Something the world wasn’t ready for. Scully: This came in 14th on Sterogum’s Wire retrospective. Mulder, that’s 14th out of 15.

Mulder: They gave The Cure a wah pedal, Scully—can your science and logic explain that? Scully: These drums sound programmed. How can you even call this post-punk?

Mulder: They tried to bury it. All post-punk. They said, “remember the Sixties?” to kids who had no idea. They gave Prince songs to the Bangles. Promised them it’d all come around again. Happy Mondays, Mother Love Bone, Dukes of the Stratosphere. They wanted us to forget what we’d seen and heard.

Scully: What is this? Mulder: It’s Manscape. Wire’s seventh album. Scully: It has two stars on AllMusic, Mulder.

25 years ago today, the U.S. launched its war in Afghanistan. Weeks earlier, Barbara Lee was the only member of Congress to vote against the 2001 Authorization of Military Force, warning it would be a blank check for forever wars. History has proven her lonely and courageous vote right.

I don’t think teaching a canon is bad, and studying intellectual traditions as historical phenomena is important to understanding culture, past and present. What’s bad is teaching a specific canon as if it’s above history and somehow universal. The frame matters, as does what’s available beyond it.

Please join me in celebrating Stanislav Petrov Day, commemorating the day in 1983 when Stanislav Petrov, the Soviet duty office for the early warning nuclear exchange system, decided that the warning he received was probably a false alarm and did NOT precipitate a nuclear war!

Like when Kermit the Frog appears in an evening talk show or something it's very clearly tongue-in-cheek. It would be pretty disturbing if say Jim Henson went around acting like Kermit was a real dude and never breaking character.

in 1627 someone published a text called 'Woe to Drunkards' with an honest to goodness Chad knight vs. Virgin fop meme
"In a woodcut on the title-page of 'Woe to Drunkards,' a sermon preached by Samuel Ward, of Ipswich, 1627, the vices of that age are typically contrasted with the virtues of a former one. In the upper compartment we are shown what men were of old by the open Bible, the foot in the stirrup, and the hand grasping the lance; while in the lower, the degeneracy of their descendants is typified by the leg and foot, decorated with a broad silk garter and a large rosette; by cards and dice, and a hand holding at the same time a lighted pipe and a drinking cup with a cockatrice in it. Twenty years afterwards, these types would have been more strictly applicable, with the inscriptions merely transposed."

this is, I think, one of the inherent problems with LLMs using natural language interfaces: they are a statistical tool *that looks like* a logical tool statistical approaches can be a useful way to find related information! BUT for it to be useful you have to *know that's what it's doing*

The conflation of AI-critical with technophobic is tactical & infuriating. While accusing us of just knee-jerk hating tech, they’re enshittifying search engines, degrading digital archives, sundowning or enclosing popular tools, etc. We were all happily using that tech!

re last repost: I stand by my assertion that if someone is being "deported" to somewhere they didn't come from, the correct term is simply "transportation" as in the Victorian practise of shipping convicts off to colonies, this is barbaric 19th century shit and "deportation" is a euphemism here

An interesting effect of that dialect map relying so much on vocabulary I've rarely said since childhood is that it placed me in Missouri, where my parents were raised. I imagine one based on phonetics would reach quite a different conclusion.

Related thought: stop rewarding abusive senior colleagues w less service (and the corollary of dumping more service on those who are highly-capable/not abusive). Instead, give those assholes service that limits their ability to abuse + require meaningful training in how to do service appropriately

Metascientists need to be required to read history of science. We already know so much about how an individual experiment is not a miraculous thing that is supposed to single-handedly produce fail-proof scientific facts. More than science, it's our assumptions about science that we must fix.

Preparing for a workshop on teaching critical thinking in STEM in light of current, let's say pressures, and decided I should start my talk with a slides that lays out the values that form my premises:
Slide header: Premises/values: Cards on the table

Bullet points:
* I care more about students’ learning than about the “accuracy” of grades or the prestige associated with a specific degree
* I want to work collaboratively with my students, rather than policing them
* I don’t want to spend any time reading, much less providing feedback on, something nobody wrote
* Science is a human, communal process; there is no knowing without knowers; and our work cannot be autocompleted
* Deep thinking and human connection are always more important than polish, speed, or “productivity”
* Research agendas should not be set by & for industry
