Refugees from the right are welcome, but not at the lectern. Go stack chairs. This isn't the next phase of your career. The next phase of your career doesn't involve a camera or mic.

Please join me in celebrating Stanislav Petrov Day, commemorating the day in 1983 when Stanislav Petrov, the Soviet duty office for the early warning nuclear exchange system, decided that the warning he received was probably a false alarm and did NOT precipitate a nuclear war!

Like when Kermit the Frog appears in an evening talk show or something it's very clearly tongue-in-cheek. It would be pretty disturbing if say Jim Henson went around acting like Kermit was a real dude and never breaking character.

After reading some of the recent pubs and discourse around US higher ed.… I should just stop right here. But here are the three major fallacies of much of what’s out there, three contexts that are missing, and the one big thing that is driving me around the bend (actually already there, but). 1/

in 1627 someone published a text called 'Woe to Drunkards' with an honest to goodness Chad knight vs. Virgin fop meme
"In a woodcut on the title-page of 'Woe to Drunkards,' a sermon preached by Samuel Ward, of Ipswich, 1627, the vices of that age are typically contrasted with the virtues of a former one. In the upper compartment we are shown what men were of old by the open Bible, the foot in the stirrup, and the hand grasping the lance; while in the lower, the degeneracy of their descendants is typified by the leg and foot, decorated with a broad silk garter and a large rosette; by cards and dice, and a hand holding at the same time a lighted pipe and a drinking cup with a cockatrice in it. Twenty years afterwards, these types would have been more strictly applicable, with the inscriptions merely transposed."

this is, I think, one of the inherent problems with LLMs using natural language interfaces: they are a statistical tool *that looks like* a logical tool statistical approaches can be a useful way to find related information! BUT for it to be useful you have to *know that's what it's doing*

The conflation of AI-critical with technophobic is tactical & infuriating. While accusing us of just knee-jerk hating tech, they’re enshittifying search engines, degrading digital archives, sundowning or enclosing popular tools, etc. We were all happily using that tech!

re last repost: I stand by my assertion that if someone is being "deported" to somewhere they didn't come from, the correct term is simply "transportation" as in the Victorian practise of shipping convicts off to colonies, this is barbaric 19th century shit and "deportation" is a euphemism here

An interesting effect of that dialect map relying so much on vocabulary I've rarely said since childhood is that it placed me in Missouri, where my parents were raised. I imagine one based on phonetics would reach quite a different conclusion.

Related thought: stop rewarding abusive senior colleagues w less service (and the corollary of dumping more service on those who are highly-capable/not abusive). Instead, give those assholes service that limits their ability to abuse + require meaningful training in how to do service appropriately

Metascientists need to be required to read history of science. We already know so much about how an individual experiment is not a miraculous thing that is supposed to single-handedly produce fail-proof scientific facts. More than science, it's our assumptions about science that we must fix.

Preparing for a workshop on teaching critical thinking in STEM in light of current, let's say pressures, and decided I should start my talk with a slides that lays out the values that form my premises:
Slide header: Premises/values: Cards on the table

Bullet points:
* I care more about students’ learning than about the “accuracy” of grades or the prestige associated with a specific degree
* I want to work collaboratively with my students, rather than policing them
* I don’t want to spend any time reading, much less providing feedback on, something nobody wrote
* Science is a human, communal process; there is no knowing without knowers; and our work cannot be autocompleted
* Deep thinking and human connection are always more important than polish, speed, or “productivity”
* Research agendas should not be set by & for industry

The "neutral" piece is the bizarro outcome of so much horserace reporting. Two millennia later, "And who is my neighbour?" remains a better angle on political debates than any poll.

The reason why people think Dolly was “politically neutral” is because they don’t understand being political as a series of actions born of commitment to an idea. Being political as defined by the pundit class is to be in front of a microphone delivering sound bytes, it’s something to be devoured

refuting every claim anybody makes is not in fact how science, or any discipline, works discarding approaches that have proven fruitless or wrongheaded, not stopping to re-litigate them every time someone digs up a junk data set or a retracted article they wish were true, is how disciplines move

"I hope that there will be some accounting someday — probably after President Trump is gone — about why we were there, and was it worth it? But none of that is gonna happen right now." I hope we reverse this thinking. It's going to require holding far more individuals accountable than one man.
