Depending on how quickly the Library of Congress implements yesterday's EO, both Super Intelligence and Lake America will propagate into the University of Virginia library catalog in about 10 days, unless we take precautions to create a bunch of local headings.

Incredible scenes from Meta. Apparently you can prompt inject their Muse agent into giving you a root shell on the box it's running on by roleplaying that you are actually the Muse agent itself.

I’m not saying it can’t happen that a noncitizen ends up registered to vote, but there needs to be both stupidity and a bunch of checks failing for it to happen. Basically zero immigrants want to come to the attention of the US government. Especially now.

To add insult to injury, the AI botnets are also polluting our web stats, making it look like we have lots of traffic from places we don’t. Lots of love to Brazil, but there’s not a lot of humans looking at papyri from there.

Please know that this is one of my few legitimate areas of actual, high-level professional expertise: Kicking the healthiest people off of a health insurance program will bankrupt it. Not 'could;' not 'might,' not 'probably," but absolutely will, with mathematical certainty.

i am genuinely bewildered by people who say that the rise of white nationalism in the republican party is a response to the "woke left." like, did the woke left cause pat buchanan's 1992 presidential campaign? is the woke left why steve king had a long career in congress?

We’re not scared. These things produce such a phenomenal amount of traffic that our systems keep going down if we don’t aggressively block bots. It’s pure self defense. And yes, it’s breaking everything.

a pretty good way to gauge the conversation is whether people are talking about harm or risk harm is about what's happening now already risk is about what could maybe happen in the future and basically the whole ai cult scene is in agreement that possible risks are more important than current harm

The US Web Design System is load-bearing infrastructure for thousands of government websites. It makes it easy for small teams with no resources (i.e. most .gov teams) to make usable, accessible websites that work for everyone. Today, it's as close as it's ever been to being replaced with AI slop.

An interesting thing I’ve encountered lately is that I’ll be reading a tech post (I am a nerd) and realize I’ve no idea what’s going on. Like, communication is not happening here. That could be age or brain stuff, but I suspect it’s that it’s LLM garbage.

Different. CEO apparently from the one currently in bed with Omarchy, BUT. It’s clear that what we needed wasn’t DEI offices doing employee education, but ones with the teeth to push institutions off corporate partners who go fascist.

It’s unfortunate that mathematics is a discipline that AI can work on (if you throw millions of dollars at it) and then get headlines in the NYT or whatever. I wonder what it will take for people to understand that the journey really is the important part. mathandai.org

One of the joys* of having worked in the cultural heritage internet for so long is seeing where links that were captured to projects that were pissy about collaborating no longer resolve because the projects are long gone. *"Joy" isn't the right term, but sarcasm is my default mode...

What Dolly taught us is that it is in fact possible to be wealthy beyond your wildest dreams of avarice but still be a fundamentally good person with a strong moral compass, and the only reason more rich people aren't like that is because they don't want to be.

Here once again ia a failure to understand history as a discipline. This only makes even slight sense if history is an effort to get to an endpoint—some bedrock facts that end further discussion. History *is* the discussion. There is thus no value or point in having machines "do" it.

The TEI Guidelines have been widely used by libraries, museums, publishers, and individual scholars to present texts for online research, teaching, and preservation.

The TEI Consortium openly licenses and freely releases all of its outputs. The maintenance and further development of the TEI Guidelines and associated software i ree by volunteers and the t onc a year, and supporting the infrastructure of the TEI have risen dramatically over the years. Never forget what Trump, his grifting cronies, and his psychopathic claque did to us during COVID. Never forgive. Fauci was a hero, and so was everyone else who fought tooth and nail against the virus, the President, his sycophantic servants, and the zombie hordes. I pray this GOP stunt backfires.

Even people not normally doing patient care were doing patient care. At UNC, there was a VP regularly directing traffic at the drive through testing. My wife (head of QA—that’s like ensuring compliance with govt regs, etc.) was assisting with infusions. It was like a war.

I’m afraid this is very incorrect. Also, the Odyssey, notoriously, is epic poetry, not drama. But the drama is often quite sophisticated too.

Hugh Cayless @hcayless.bsky.social · 19/07/2026
Full disclosure: I saw the Odyssey movie yesterday. It’s totally worth seeing and very good. It does not manage the level of complexity of the original, but the medium has its own limitations, and maybe it’s not possible to tell the story in a sophisticated enough way…
