9 October 1936. British actor Brian Blessed was born in Mexborough, Yorkshire. He’s best known for playing PC (“Fancy”) Smith in Z-Cars, Augustus in BBC series I Claudius and Boss Nass in Star Wars: Episode I: The Phantom Menace. He also shouts a lot in TV advertisements.

On this day in 1879, the Battle of Angamos is fought. Two Chilean ironclads, the Almirante Cochrane, and the Blanco Encalada capture the Peruvian ironclad Huáscar after a three hour battle off the north Chilean coast (then belonging to Bolivia) near Antofagasta. (1/3) #NavalHistory

Very unusual to see a Nobel Prize going to a botanist! Botany is the oldest science & all others grew from It in ways. I realise now that compared to our fellow students doing other biological subjects we had a lot of history to learn. You’d think the announcement would include a link to why he won!

Reconnaissance squadron of tankettes from the 51st Praetorian Guard. Not sure a pith helmet is the most suitable headgear while serving in a tank, but how else would you know which regiment they were from? 🙂 #Nerdlings #imperialguard #praertorians #warhammer40k

Tankettes in a desert scheme part of the Praetorian Guard. Two are armed solely with a light stubber, the third with a quad-barrelled weapon. The crew are dressed in period red tunics and white pith helmets.

5 Oct 1744 (O.S.) // 100-gun 1st-rate HMS Victory (launched 1737), flagship of Admiral Sir John Balchen, was with her squadron returning to England from Gibraltar when the ships were scattered by a violent storm off Ushant. HMS Victory, driven towards the Channel Islands, was lost with all hands.

This is an imaginative re-creation of the last moments the Victory was seen, with lanterns in her rigging, her sails blowing loose, firing distress guns, and about to be overwhelmed by the storm. It is not an accurate depiction of the ship as she was at the time of her loss.
