I've always thought that offsets are largely an accounting sham; as an ecologist they make little sense to me on a finite planet and where most habitats and ecosystems can't be recovered quickly. This video rams it home. National parks and koalas are not there to help polluters to keep polluting.

Reading Katherine Wilson's excellent article in this month's The Monthly, and this paragraph is the most concise summary you'll ever read of Labor's record on environmental issues for the last 12 years.
The first page of Katherine Wilson's article, with the headline 'Calling the Shots' and a picture of duck hunters knee deep in water, waiting for something to kill.Consensus among ecologists is that Labor's nature governance has been catastrophic. Labor has overseen the most rapid ecosystem decline in Victoria’s history and has aggressively slashed environmental oversight. It has removed whole departments of biodiversity experts; allowed statutory agencies to override nature laws; limited ombudsman and IBAC powers; and abolished expert panels, including the Victorian Environmental Assessment Council and the Victorian Marine and Coastal Council. It decimated funding for wildlife carers and dramatically increased the burden on volunteers. Among repeatedly broken promises are Wildlife Act reforms, and end to native logging (which continues through loopholes) and the promised Great Forest National Park.
