A huge congratulations is in order for the crew at Save Perth Hills who have campaigned tirelessly since 1991 against Satterley's plan that would have seen 535 ha of land cleared. This decision means 60,000 trees, predominantly 100 to 200 year old jarrahs and marris will remain standing.

It's alarming that at least half of the thinned timber is being burnt straight away, releasing carbon into the atmosphere and contributing to climate change, increasing water and heat stress on the very forests thinning is supposed to protect.

Our politicians need to hear from us! One of the most powerful things you can do to protect WA’s precious forests from prescribed burning is meet directly with your local Member of Parliament and ask them to take action. Take this online workshop and learn how! RSVP: wafa.org.au/events/

After extensive community action that delayed the burning of the tingles last summer, DBCA has confirmed that the tingles are back in the firing line in this years plan. This is a disappointing outcome when the government could have taken this opportunity to give the tingles long term protection.

All bauxite mining in the jarrah forest will now be owned by one US company that has a dismal record of compliance with Aus. laws. Alcoa’s expansion should be scrapped, because while it's under assessment, the impact is already clear: mining for bauxite destroys forests and endangers our water.

South32 has read the writing on the wall; mining in the NJF isn’t an option for the future, especially given the massive public backlash. We know Alcoa’s rehabilitation efforts are a farce, so why trust them to take over thousands of hectares of land yet to be rehabilitated by South32?

WAFA relies on regular donations from people like you to ensure that we can remain independent and effective. Since 1990, we’ve been working towards our ultimate goal of protection of WA’s Southwest forests from logging, mining and poor management.
Notes app that reads "What can a donation to WAFA do for the Southwest forests?" with dot points reading

Fund training so people can meet their MPs
Help us pay for lawyers so we can take on mining giants in court
Enable vital research and monitoring that informs forest management
Help us reach wider audiences through advertising and media
Advocate for stronger laws that protect the environment
Engage communities through events, education and conversations.

Over the past 6 years, the land around this significant jarrah tree was cleared and mined or turned into road. Now, it has died, likely as a result of the disturbance.
A significant jarrah tree surrounded by clearing for mining. Headline from the ABC reads Regulator investigates alleged breach of Alcoa's mining exemption conditions. A single tree threatens to disrupt US mining giant Alcoa's expansion in Western Australia, with the company under investigation over an alleged breach of its state-imposed mining conditions.

Whilst three Tingle blocks were removed from the prescribed burn plan just before Christmas, some Tingles remain in the firing line.
Newspaper headlines for two articles in the Albany Advertiser reading 1. Prescribed burn in Walpole angers Tingle Action Group who say DBCA has backflipped on moratorium (A prescribed burn east of Walpole has alarmed the Tingle Action Group, who say the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions is going back on its pre-Christmas promise not to start new burns.) and 2. Burn concerns spark protest in Denmark, residents line the streets in bid to halt planned Walpole burn.
