After the latest interest rate rise, Labor's priority is tax cuts for property investors. Meanwhile renters in Melbourne are paying 70% more than 5 years ago and young people are being locked out of ever buying a place.

The Liberals and One Nation want to derail renewable investment, while Labor continue approving new gas projects. Slowing the shift to renewable energy and keeping us hooked on coal & gas will not only cook the planet, it will drive up energy prices for every Victorian.

On the final sitting day of this parliamentary term, we passed a very important bill. It will significantly strengthen Victoria’s anti-corruption watchdog, IBAC. This was the result of years of Greens advocacy - and it was Tim Read who led the charge. He would have been proud tonight.

Labor is cutting investment in cycling infrastructure & failing to deliver Victoria’s Strategic Cycling Corridors. This would be a drop in the ocean of a $1.55b project. Yet again, it seems like the new premier is making foolish cuts to projects out of desperation to cling to power. 🧵

The cost of not acting on climate change is here. Climate disasters push up insurance premiums & housing costs, as rebuilding competes with new builds for tradies & materials. Those costs belong on the balance sheets of the companies fuelling the climate crisis, not family budgets.

Andrew is spot on. Labor's general inaction on building Accessible tram stops is disgraceful, but choosing to actively rebuild stops to not comply with Accessibility standards is a real kick in the teeth. Everyone should be able to get around independently on PT. Shame on Labor.

In Victoria we're seeing the cost of rebuilding homes after climate disasters skyrocket - but Labor and the Liberals want to drag us backwards by supporting new coal and gas. The Greens will swiftly move to renewables and make the polluters pay for the climate damage they cause.

As we see the tragic scenes of climate-fuelled disaster in Nepal, the latest data shows Australia's emissions barely coming down at all. In Victoria, One Nation and the Liberals are pledging to spend taxpayer money on more coal stations or keeping polluting coal open longer. (1/4)
Screenshot from an article in The Point, which is linked down-thread.

Text reading "The government has set the target of reducing Australia’s emissions to 43% below 2005 levels by 2030 and (at best) 62% below 2005 levels by 2035, with the longer-term goal of hitting net zero emissions by 2050.

These targets are nowhere near enough to ensure Australia does its part to limit global warming to 2ºC above pre-industrial levels.

The Climate Council has noted that “to have a strong chance of meeting this goal, Australia would need to set a net zero target for 2035.”

Unfortunately, while we are not on target for net zero by 2035, neither is the current trajectory anywhere near the path to achieving net zero by 2050:"

Graph showing Australia's actual emissions since 2020, with future projections indicating the path to net zero by 2035; our 2030 target; our 2035 target; net zero by 2050; and the trend since June 2023. Each of these is higher than the last.

Text reading "Chart: The Australia Institute, source DCCEEW, Table 1B.

It’s bad enough to set emissions targets that don’t accord with the science, but to fail to achieve them is utterly pathetic."

IBAC is unable to investigate the vast majority of complaints about Victoria Police officers - which means most of the time police are investigating themselves. Victoria needs an independent police ombudsman that can investigate these complaints without conflicts of interest.
