I wish, though, that the article had also provided one of the nebulous Yudkowskyian rationalist definitions of "artificial general intelligence" to contrast with the scientific takes, since that's the concept of intelligence currently funneling away all our money.

I really liked this interdisciplinary analysis on "AI." Concise and thought-provoking. I often struggle to explain why linguistics disproves most of what people think about LLMs, and the contributions from other disciplines are helpful at rounding out the conversation.

My high school science could not have prepared me adequately; my consequent college GPA dooms me. There's a reason both HMC graduates from my high school have depression. Graduates of rich preparatory schools simply had a smoother on ramp. I didn't realize the extent of this until years later.

Just once in my life I would like to see a Democrat being interviewed by right wing media like Fox News or right wing media like every single other outlet treat their questions with the contempt they deserve. I know it's not going to fix everything or maybe even anything but how much coverage and how much groundswell of excitement from the base do you think it would inspire if when asked about "boys in girls sports" or some other stupid fucking culture war distraction one of them finally said "What the fuck are you talking about man? You sound like a dumb asshole right now."

What's the worst that's going to happen the New York Times is gonna work overtime to make sure you don't get elected? They were already doing that buddy.

You simply say "Are you stupid? Do you think I am stupid? And do you think all of the people watching at home are stupid? Everyone sees through what you are doing. Using one group as a scapegoat for the very real problems everyone has – all caused by Republicans by the way – unlike this fake one you have made up. Dumb asshole."

Just go on the attack for once instead of sitting there trying to please your enemy who is in the process of trying to humiliate you.

And if you want to say something else true that almost no Democrat ever says for some reason you can top it off with a “Every single Republican in our lifetime has sought to make our lives worse in every way possible. I’d like to try to stop that.”

And in this presumption, Google tries to narrow and direct my search behavior in a way that infuriates me as a library science nerd. No database is neutral, but they generally tend to stay out of your way. When you go to your local library catalogue, your desires (and your skill at using a particular repository) are what move you through, not the library catalogue nudging you toward what it thinks you should be searching for.
Google, uninvited, attempts to steer me down the path it boldly presumes I mean to go, in the process inherently attempting to limit the information I encounter by pushing me toward itself instead of actual results.
Google has always done this with its opaque and changing priorities, but that priority has changed from making websites conform to its whims to trying to force me to conform to its obsession with Al.
