i do unironically think people that are cosmopolitan need sorta paradoxically be more chauvinist about it tbh. places and people that are cosmopolitan in outlook are better than places that are provincially minded. the kind of performative handwringing about not being 'authentic' is bad and weak.

Somewhere in a sweltering desert, is the cell of Carlitos Ricardo Parias. He holds up a plastic bottle, gazing at the worm-like creatures swimming in his drinking water. His other arm is turning purple from a gunshot wound for which he says he hasn’t received proper medical care.

Designing a club for a typical video game might mean generating a few nonplayable characters in different-colored shirts, says top artist Aaron Garbut. In GTA VI, though, it means animating and scripting each individual patron, creating drinks, adding music, crafting lighting, matching the music to that lighting and composing all the other “layers and layers and layers of detail” that make a virtual club feel as authentic as possible.

I feel like the biggest problems in defense commentary is the assumption that militaries are organic parts or outgrowths of their society. The professional military is, if anything, a semi-domesticated animal at best, lead by people who have never really experienced the civilian world as adults.

Hello

I am writing as a member about the SoA signing the Charter of Ethical AI Use in the Creative Industries.

Your pledge says "By offering ethical standards and a voluntary code for generative AI use, we in no way dismiss or disagree with serious concerns arising from its creation or application, including but not limited to the largescale use of creative work without transparency, permission or payment; the ongoing risk of displacement of creators’ work; the dilution of the market; and the environmental impacts."

This is meaningless. Offering an "ethical code" to deal with what you acknowledge to be an inherently unethical industry isn't a way of ameliorating harm: it's a fig leaf to protect the people who want to use this tech.

- I do not believe it is possible for a publisher to "balance" the benefits of GenAI in terms of reducing staff and creative costs (which, let's face it, is what it's for) against "the environmental, social, societal, economic, democratic and ethical impacts for humans and the planet".
- I do not believe that any publisher using GenAI is doing so with a view to investing in people's skills or sharing the benefits. Luckily they don't have to do so under your Charter, they only have to be "mindful" about its impact. Thoughts and prayers.
- As to "Where AI is used, it is used for good: to widen access, inclusion and opportunity and to increase discoverability, helping more creators, from more backgrounds, reach wider audiences, and help to make creative work more accessible to all"...this is meaningless word salad, an array of buzzwords entirely unrelated to what GenAI does or is for. All it does is support the idea that GenAI can be used for good in publishing and have a positive impact on creators, something which reality has, so far, not borne out in the slightest.

Bit rich to get on your high horse over queer people and the rights of children, coming from someone charged with possession of CSAM
This shift followed significant lobbying by charities with a special interest in LGBT rights, which includes activism regarding gay marriage, parenthood outside the scope of heterosexuality, transgender interests, and the opposition to Section 28. The decision was also informed by repeated pushes for reform from the Welsh devolved government, which has prioritised sexual education alongside basic literacy and numeracy in classrooms from age 3.Looking more closely at the institutions that shape the curriculum, it is staggering that their philosophical premises are rarely disclosed to the public and debated more openly.
In particular, the UN Convention on the Rights of the Child (UNCRC), created in 1989, emphasises the child's legal and personal autonomy, including their right to receive RSE teaching. The idea that a child might be fully autonomous, even from their parents, and specifically for the purpose of teaching about "sex" and all its corollaries (gender, sexuality, and so on), should ring alarm bells.

It’s no coincidence that these freaks are all again sex education. Because comprehension sex ed is one of the best protections we have against child sexual abuse. It teaches kids that adults making them do stuff is wrong and gives them a language to articulate if something is being done to them.

Per the Middle East Studies Association, since October 7, 76 North American academics have been fired for speaking out against the genocide in Palestine. Two-thirds of those people are non-white. 16.5% are Jewish. afi.mesana.org/resource/les...
Retaliation goes far beyond firing. Of 196 recorded incidents of employer retaliation against employees speaking out on Palestine, nearly 40% (76) resulted in termination. Retaliation that does not rise to the level of termination is an even larger phenomenon.
All categories of academic workers are at risk. Of the 162 individuals whose employment status was disclosed, 30% involved non-tenure track faculty or instructors, and 36% were tenured.
People of color are disproportionately affected. Of the 134 cases recorded in the AFI database in which respondents’ identification is known, two-thirds were people of color: 30% SWANA; 10.5% Black; and 27% other POC. Additionally, 16.5% identify as Jewish. More than half of those targeted whose gender is known are women. Such retaliation compounds the abuse of already racist and sexist work environments.

therapists before I found one who was a good fit for me. The very first therapist I ever met gasped, brought her hands to her mouth, and looked on with horror when I described how, when I was 8 years old, my mother pretended to give away the family cat while I was at school. When I came home after school, she watched me walk from room to room as I called out for my pet. When she didn’t appear, my mother told me that she had given her away. This was about two years after my parents gave away our family dog, also while I was at school, and also without warning.

I remember breaking down into sobs as I flung myself to the living room floor, my face buried in my tiny fists. And when I felt something furry against my arm, I realized it was all a ruse. My cat was alive and well and still at home with us. When I asked my mother why she had done this, she simply said, “To see how you’d react.” It would be nearly 40 years before I allowed myself to bond with another cat, and another decade before I attempted therapy again.
