I often see people argue that clean energy is not reducing emissions, because it just adds to rather than replaces fossil fuels. This argument is deeply misguided – clean energy built since 2005 has displaced 23 billion tons. I dive in over at The Climate Brink:
theclimatebrink.com
What if the world hadn't built wind and solar?
Clean energy does not simply “add to” global energy use; it displaces fossil sources that would otherwise get built.

One driver for distributed solar is the high cost of diesel in the energy crisis. Africa spent $2.4b importing Chinese panels in last 12 months; generating the same electricity from diesel would cost around that EVERY THREE MONTHS. Solar+batteries are the new diesel generator.

Batteries are coming. In the last two years, the value of solar panel exports doubled.. and battery exports quadrupled🔋 Africa now imports more $ of batteries than solar panels from China. The largest markets are Nigeria+DRC, where 🇨🇳battery exports far exceed solar exports.

🇸🇪 DSO Mölndal Energi Nät presents the results of the first winter (2025/26) with a local flexibility market: cost-neutral, 12.5% load reduction in the 100 highest hours and 33% in the winter peak hour. This was made possible thanks to EVs, batteries, district heating, heat pumps and industry.
The image shows just how much of a difference flexibility trading has made during the hundred hours in winter when electricity consumption in Mölndal was at its highest (the hundred hours with the highest load).

OECD power generation from gas has seen a significant drop in the five months since LNG flows through the Strait of Hormuz were first disrupted. This has not resulted in an increase in coal-fired generation as solar and wind have covered demand growth and the fall in gas.

Second, moving a market from pay-as-clear to pay-as-bid means participants simply adjust their bids accordingly. Low marginal cost renewables go from bidding their true cost (i.e. zero) to bidding their expectation for the marginal plant, which is... you guessed it... usually a gas plant! (9/12)
