sorry, but torturing the omelas kid is just a smart move, polling-wise. i personally wish there wasn't a kid in the omelas hole--of course i do!--but let's not get distracted by purity tests, here.

25th anniversary of one of the pivotal events in modern history. On this day, September 11th, 2001, nobody knew the carnage that was about to descend on us. And then, out of a clear blue sky, tragedy struck as Iain Duncan Smith won the tory leadership.

This trumps my previous favourite, the NME’s review of Elvis’ final album, headlined “The Great Cheeseburger Waddles On”, followed – after Elvis died the day that issue hit the newsstands – by a front page the next week showing him in his 1950s pomp, with the words: “Remember Him This Way”

It's interesting that the French call a bat (as in the mammal) a 'chauve-souris' ... Seems reasonable to reference a bat as a type of (or similar to a) mouse but you'd think 'flying' might be its USP rather than 'bald', non ..?

40 years ago I began my Russian degree course at the University of Leeds. It was the era of perestroika & glasnost. Who could have imagined then what the world would look like four decades on. At night, on a short wave radio, I’d listen to music from the USSR. I still remember some of the melodies.

In a world where too many great songs have travestied bu their reduction into ad jingles, it's a mercy that AFAIK Visage's 'Fade to Grey' hasn't yet been used to sell hair products ("Don't Fade to Grey").

Just heard Paul McCartney's 'Silly Love Songs' on the radio (Smooth 70s, please don't judge) and it made me remember how I spent *too many hours* as a 1980s teenager with an out-of-time Beatles obsession (listened to all the records, watched documentaries, read lots of books about them) ... (1/4)

Happy birthday to #astrophysicist Jocelyn Bell Burnell! In 1967, as a grad student she discovered the 1st radio pulsar, a highly magnetized, rotating neutron star that emits a beam of EM radiation. 🧪🐡👩🏼‍🔬🎢🔭 #histsci This radiation can only be observed when the star is pointed towards us;
My linocut print ‘Jocelyn Bell and the LGM-1’ showing the young astronomer in dark grey ink holding a sheet of paper, smiling while looking over her shoulder, dressed in a pea coat, cat’s eye glasses and pigtails. Behind her in green is her famous pulsar dataset like a series of horizontal parallel lines, each with an irregular peak in the middle, resembling a mountain range on a topographical map.

I've suggested to my daughter - a musician and far too cool to take this up - that she work a cover of the song 'Maybe Tomorrow' into her set list and see if any audience members aged 45 to 55 - i.e. watching children's TV in the early 1980s - tear up ... www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZVHK...
