I’m so old, I remember when the Republican governor of Iowa threw open the doors of the state to wave after wave of refugee immigrants, welcoming them with welcome arms to become Iowans and let their cultures enrich the lives of all of us.

When you become middle-aged, you have to get into smoking meats, World War 2 history, or painting tiny giant robots for a game you'll never play. Anyway, I really like how the red on the underbarrel gives the illusion that this Rifleman has a pair of pump-action shotguns. #battletech
A basic Rifleman 'mech painted in red representing House Kurita. The underbarrel of the second gun on each arm is painted to look like a pump shotgun.

The image is of a four panel comic.
In the first panel we see a dragon sitting on a pile of treasure. A speech bubble pointing off panel reads, “Dragon, why do you have all this treasure?”
In the second panel we zoom in on the dragons face. He simply says “shiny”.
In the third panel we pan to the left and see that there is a crow standing next to the dragon on the treasure.
In the fourth panel we zoom in on the crows face. He says “hell yeah”.

Asked why the WNBA continues to experience these heightened distractions, Cloud said, "Men."
"The men now that are like 'Oh, we need to protect the WNBA,’ y'all were the same ones saying we shouldn't be paid," Cloud continued. "Y'all were the same ones saying we shouldn't have been invested in, saying we're a joke, the same ones that don't respect Black women. So, if you're going to protect women, that means all women. Ursula K LeGuin was spot on with the commodification of fantasy. I'm so tired.
An image of Emperor Palpatine as a video game character. He has an assault rifle in his hands, and a the background is a red outline of the Death Star with blue Silhouettes of three X-Wing fighters approaching it.Commodified fantasy takes no risks: it invents nothing, but imitates and trivializes. It proceeds by depriving the old stories of their intellectual and ethical complexity, turning their action to violence, their actors to dolls, and their truth- telling to sentimental platitude. Heroes brandish their swords, lasers, wands, as mechanically as combine harvesters, reaping profits. Profoundly disturbing moral choices are sanitized, made cute, made safe. The passionately conceived ideas of the great story-tellers are copied, stereotyped, reduced to toys, molded in bright-colored plastic, advertised, sold, broken, junked, replaceable, interchangeable.

I know Calvin’s dad is already having a moment, but every terrible “outsource precious and fleeting moments with your children to tech so that you can spend more time on your work” pitch makes me think of that one strip I never really cared about as a kid, but care a lot about as an adult.
The Calvin and Hobbes strip where Calvin asks his dad to come play in the snow with him. His dad initially says no, because he has to work. Then, angry at himself, his Dad goes out to build a snowman with Calvin. As the Dad works into the night to make up for it, we see Calvin’s mum lifting him up to give one of the few, if only, kisses he ever gives his dad in the Calvin and Hobbes run. His dad is content. It’s a textless comic, and it’s lovely.

Taking one of the AI tools at our disposal for a spin and it's going well.
Screenshot from MS Copilot that reads: What are the most memorable product safety hazard moments in the works of Shakespeare?
Copilot said: Shakespeare didn’t write about consumer product recalls—but his plays are full of vivid, often darkly funny “product‑safety hazards” that resonate surprisingly well with modern public‑safety themes. Here are some of the most memorable moments where everyday objects, tools, or environments become dangerous in ways a modern product‑safety specialist (like you!) might appreciate. I’ll keep everything high‑level and not quote copyrighted text.Memorable “Product Safety Hazards” in Shakespeare.
1. Romeo and Juliet. Hazard: Misbranded or improperly labeled pharmaceuticals.
Friar Lawrence’s sleeping potion is essentially a mislabeled, high‑risk drug administered without testing, documentation, or follow‑up. The result? A catastrophic misunderstanding and multiple fatalities.
Modern parallel: Hazardous pharmaceuticals lacking clear instructions, proper dosing, or oversight.
