every other sportsball statistic looks/sounds like this to me: > so-and-so holds his team‘s all-time record for the most home runs hit during a playoff game while there are two outs in the 7th inning after a new moon

Ultimately I think human authorship is impoetant, even if AI tools are part of the process. (Part of, not the start and finish)
In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgent to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity.

The other reason you should read Radium Girls is the lawsuits that came out of the girls being made to eat radium on the job (and a later similar case) helped create OSHA. Remember: safety rules are written in blood.

I had an easier time picking up on football‘s rules bc it seems like the football TV broadcasts have a lot more slow mo replays with helpful annotations to show you exactly what happened and how in a play

I married into a family that loves Chicago sports, esp. the Cubs, and being from a sports-neutral family myself means I am now a Cubs fan. I have been to 3 games now in as many years and I can finally say I generally know what’s going on 80% of the time, and I was genuinely sad when they lost!

This is why I'm so in favor of accessory commercial units. Just getting people in the US used to **walking** for a cup of coffee or a sandwich in the neighborhood may finally do something to rid Americans of our terminal car brain.

The idea that we *can't* rebuild a thing that we built once already seems deeply flawed. It will cost a lot of money but we can in fact do it.

Because it keeps popping up in AI articles, “Cure for cancer” is a pretty good indicator that someone knows fuck all about biology. At minimum both should be plural!

imagine if we lived in a good timeline where every company was integrating fruit fly brain into their products instead of AI instead of “Ask Gemini” it’d be like “Ask Benny the Fruit Fly” and you’d be like “how do u feel about fruit” and Benny’d be like “bzzzzzzzzt” fuck how great would that be

Technology enthusiasts severely overestimate the average person’s desire or willingness or capacity to build and use AI agents. I understand some work roles that could mandate or encourage it but that is no way a tech revolution. Agents are best for structured, clearly delineated tasks.

The idea of AI curing all diseases is, IMO, silly. Biomedical research is mostly limited by data, not ideas. Imagine saying AI will build a world-champion basketball team by replacing basketball coaches with hyperintelligent AI. You see the problem. Someone still needs to dribble and make shots.

A couple weeks ago I heard a joyful shriek from across the street. My neighbor kids, who I planted milkweed for, found 2 monarch caterpillars by their stoop. This week, those monarchs hatched. Our block is fully concrete, .3 miles to the closest green space. But we’re supporting the life cycle 🥰

I wrote this quickly at a bus stop and didn't realize it would go viral, or else I would have worded it better. But the point is that the media is too credulous about AI killing everyone in 10 years (how?) when climate change is killing people now and will only get worse (we know exactly how).

When you cook for someone a special meal you know they‘ll love, and then they scarf it down and ask for more… You can get that feeling by planting native plants!!
A monarch caterpillar on a butterfly milkweed. The caterpillar has eaten almost all of the leaves off them stem it is on. Milkweed is its favorite!! In fact milkweed plants (members of the genus Asclepias) are the only host plants for monarch caterpillars.

One of the things that frustrates me most is that LLMs are being sold as an everything tool, which means you’re all in or all out. It’s turned into this weird purity thing. But I want there to be room for nuance and conversations about appropriate use-cases and the philosophy behind objections.

One of most heartbreaking things about Hank Green turning to LLMs is that he gets to do science communication full-time to a massive audience and is well-resourced. He doesn't need to cut corners or outsource his thinking. Meanwhile, there are so many people doing amazing work with zero resources.
