Those who think the fire alert was overkill seriously underestimate the BBQ-related stupidity of some people. A few years ago, part of a Cambridge college almost burned down because some students decided to light a disposable BBQ on the lead roof on one of the buildings. 🙄

Media coverage of tough fiscal headwinds always involves - Iran impacts - tax pledges of 2024 - defence spending commitments - other spending pressure Tends to ignore a £10 billion [stabilise] to £25 billion [keep near zero] question of accounting for cutting net migration + how low it goes/stays

One thing about the World Cup is that since 1974 it's a trophy but not a cup. I wonder if there's any other major competitions which are called cups but don't have an actual cup (something the winner could pour a beverage in).

Probably the worst take I have ever made. Andy Burnham's goose was not in fact cooked at all. Whilst we couldn't account for it, the goose had simply paddled up the canal from Pennington Flash to Scotsman's Flash.

Can you imagine going back two years and telling people that under Labour in 2026 the FTSE100 has hit an all time high, net zero is flying, waiting lists are coming down comfortably, immigration has plummeted 82% but Starmer has the worst PM polling ever and is about to be ousted. Madness.

Got into an argument on Sky a few weeks about about banning social media for teens. "But parents want it!" Sure, but that doesn't mean it will work or is a good idea! How about a serious conversation about what social media is doing to all of us, adults included? Or is that too difficult?

The “Blue Labour” strategy still being promoted by some on Labour right is premised on being able to win social conservatives while holding on to social liberals. Failure state for this strategy is failing to win social cons while alienating social liberals. Here is a map of that failure state:

Whenever it is pointed out that US government may not get its own way in court, some reply guy asserts I am “optimistic”. I am a legal commentator: I am never optimistic. I have a Brummie accent: I never sound optimistic. This all could very badly for the courts and rule of law. Not optimism.
