One grim conclusion I take from every Climate Week I've attended is that the core old-school "climate communicators" have not updated their priors or their approach in decades, despite everything that's happened, and still, on a deep fundamental level, do not understand conservatives.

Yes, every billionaire is a policy failure. You know who else is a policy failure? Your Berkeley hippie grandpa who pays $100 in annual property taxes on a $2.5 million house and uses the leftover cash to sue people who try to build apartments in his neighborhood.

"Why does San Francisco still have so much car traffic?" I ask as I cast my vote on the 53rd ballot box attempt to de-pedestrianize the Great Highway.

HUGE NEWS ON HOLDING ICE AND BORDER PATROL ACCOUNTABLE: My bill to allow people to sue federal agents for violating their constitutional rights — just like people can already sue local police — received its final approval from the Senate and is on its way to the Governor! 🧵

First of all, this fight has not “deeply divided” Sunset residents. We live in the Sunset and everyone we know loves the park. Second of all, there is no “compromise” that does not destroy the park. Third of all (should have gone first!), Sunset Dunes is awesome, full of good vibes and neighbors.

The fight to restore Sunset Dunes to roadway is the dumbest most wasteful ballot measure—we’ve already voted on it twice! Indicative of the west side NIMBYS that have throttled housing and transit for decades.

Good morning. Someone is always going to make money on housing. I would rather see developers make money building new homes for people to live in than the situation we have now, where landlords and property owners are getting rich off of housing scarcity.

YIMBYs, a new moment of triumph is upon us! Atherton, the Silicon Valley enclave that prohibits all but single-family homes, one of the most exclusionary towns in the country, has just received its first multifamily housing project (ever!) under @scottwiener.bsky.social’s SB79!

One more blurb from the great housing champion @buffywicks.bsky.social
“The East Bay district I represent has been rocked by the intertwining crises addressed in Build or Die: soaring housing costs, a strained public transit system, and cities that bear the scars of historic redlining and exclusionary zoning. Our urban centers are in crisis, and our community members suffer the consequences. To understand where we go from here, research like Ned Resnikoff’s is invaluable. With a journalist’s relentless curiosity and a policy analyst’s deep subject matter expertise, Resnikoff has dedicated himself to the betterment of our cities—a defining fight of our times.”—Buffy Wicks, California State assemblymember

Little B is sick today but feels fine, so we're doing some social distancing outdoor time at JFK Promenade and Sunset Dunes. Feeling so grateful for these peaceful, beautiful spaces where we can get our zoomies out and have a joyful Thursday sick day.

YIMBYism is absolutely a precondition for decarbonizing the United States and it drives me insane that a lot of legacy climate orgs, particularly here in California, remain hostile to dense housing construction. www.sightline.org/apartments-a...

From a housing perspective, I actually think the LA mayoral race might be more important than the governor’s race. The pro-housing momentum at the state level has always been in the legislature, but Los Angeles NEEDS a pro housing mayor.

Ah cool, so the frontrunner for California’s next governor is already signaling he wants to retreat on the state’s climate goals (via POLITICO)
EV TREPIDATION: Xavier Becerra has serious doubts about California’s lofty electric vehicle ambitions.

The former Health and Human Services secretary, who’s leading in the polls ahead of the Tuesday primary, wouldn’t commit to the state’s goal of banning purchases of new gas and hybrid vehicles starting in 2035 in a recent POLITICO survey.

“California should transition from gas-powered vehicles when it makes sense — when infrastructure and affordability are there for California families,” he wrote in response to a question about whether California should maintain the strategy.

I am perplexed by the S.F. partisans outraged that S.F. Bike Coalition endorsed Scott Wiener over Connie Chan - given that the latter’s signature policy priorities over the past six years have been re-opening JFK Drive and Sunset Dunes to cars.

America has a housing shortage. Every single housing proposal you see that is not "build more housing" will have the primary effect of pushing up the prices of existing housing, and is therefore, in reality, a plan to enrich current homeowners. In conclusion, build more housing.

I'm not the first person to note this, but authoritarian crackdowns are much more difficult in cities, where's there's public space & people can gather & find solidarity. That's partly why reactionary governments everywhere prefer suburbanization -- it disperses, dilutes, & atomizes the public.

One of the biggest drivers of high housing costs is that a small, highly motivated group of incumbent homeowners block new housing in their neighborhoods and almost no one is organized to push back. Young people bear the brunt of that imbalance. Be a housing fan.
