From Lucas Lux in @sfstandard.com After so many defeats — at the ballot box, in the courts, and at City Hall — Sunset Dunes opponents need to lay down arms, and embrace the city’s newest coastal park. sfstandard.com/opinion/2026...

Opinion
San Franciscans are sick of fighting about the Great Highway. It's time to move on.Noah Berger, SF Standard
"The reality is that Sunset Dunes is a wildly popular park that has changed the Sunset - and the city - for the better. The sooner we stop treating it like an unresolved controversy and start treating it like the success it clearly is, the sooner we can start investing in its future as a world-class coastal park, on par with places like Crissy Field, Tunnel Tops, and India Basin."

Frustrating that we live in an era where politicians can just lie to create whatever compelling-sounding argument they want. Supervisor Wong claimed that creating Sunset Dunes doubled traffic injuries in the district. That sounds really bad, except it's also horse apples.

Just in: Supervisor alanwongsf failed to get the required signatures from fellow Supervisors to place another ballot measure targeting Sunset Dunes before SF voters. It’s time to move forward and focus on improving our coastal park together. SF has made a decision, and the park is here to stay.

Rode my bike through the Panhandle, along JFK Promenade and through the park to Sunset Dunes at sunset. Gorgeous night. Skaters skating, a DJ spinning mellow sunset beats. So many people out in all the parks. A beautiful celebration of recent victories in the war on cars, SF front. 14 fun miles.
An open, heart-shaped sculpture through which you can see people walking along Sunset Dunes Park (formerly Great Highway, now a much greater recreation area) and beyond ocean beach and the pacific ocean just a few minutes after sunset.

Recently, to justify his political stunt and waste SF voters’ time with a third ballot measure, Supervisor Alan Wong is willfully misrepresenting data. He’s been claiming that Sunset Dunes is causing “traffic injuries in District 4 to nearly double.” 🤦That’s patently false.
FACT CHECK
Supervisor Alan Wong is willfully misrepresenting data to justify a park closure ballot measure. He claims that Sunset Dunes is causing "traffic injuries in District 4 to nearly double."
THE REALITY
District 4 Injuries in 2022 and 2023, with the weekend-only pilot, were higher than 2024 and 2025.
SF residents now finally have a safe place to walk, bike and play in the Sunset, and the data backs this up.It's disappointing that Supervisor Wong is choosing to misrepresent data about traffic injuries to back up a political stunt, instead of engaging in thoughtful policymaking.
We hope his colleagues honor the will of the voters and let him play out this stunt as a solo act.

🌊 Sunset dunes is winning new friends in the neighborhood, @sfstandard.com reports in their Power Play newsletter:
Sunset dunes is winning new friends in the neighborhood"Last month's recall...left some pundits assuming District 4 voters would overwhelmingly support a measure to repeal the park.
But new polling obtained by [the Standard] suggests D4 voters are split... Lurie has yet to appoint Engardio's replacement, but the poll could suggest he doesn't have to pick someone with a firm position on overturning Prop. K."
Josh Koen in Power PlayLet's face it, many of our neighbors weren't sure about Sunset Dunes last year.
But now that we're seeing the benefits (and similar levels of traffic), hearts are changing in the Sunset. This new poll shows a 15 percentage point jump in support for the park in the Sunset - that's huge.
We've always known a coastal park is best for both the neighborhood and city. The coast belongs to all San Franciscans, but as Sunset residents, we have a special duty to be stewards for the place we call home.
