Preprints are used in evaluations in most sensible funding bodies, including ERC, and should be THE evaluation tool of the work. That ‘come back when you have published the work’ states where we are at, the degradation of Science that we are achieving.

I am constantly surprise by the barrier that many postdocs looking for a job in the #biosci find when they have a #preprint. They are often told: don’t bother to apply until you publish your paper. WHAT DOES PUBLICATION SAY ABOUT THE WORK THAT THE PREPRINT DOESN’T brief 🧵

The data is in: the NIH goalposts have shifted. What were once almost certain fundable scores have become coin flips and what used to be likely grants have become aspirational, leading to fewer awards. Another manifestation of how HHS policies have led to fewer awards and less science.
Graph of award probability of R35 and R01 from NIH factbook as a function of review rank percentile. As is apparent, 2025 is a significant departure, with lower award probabilities at all scores <40 and significant departures from norm, where even being in the top 10% is no longer a nearly certain indicator of success.

Stress-induced sympathetic hyperactivation drives hair follicle necrosis to trigger autoimmunity
Acute stress causes immediate hair follicle necrosis and hair loss via sympathetic nerves, which in turn activates and expands autoreactive CD8⁺ T cells targeting hair follicles. Thus, a single stress event not only causes immediate tissue damage but also predisposes the tissue to future autoimmune attack.
