One thing we definitely needed in this specific news cycle is a sit-down with DeShaun Watson. Very savvy, Amazon.

Not replying directly because they're apparently addressing a different issue, but one of my pet peeves is the belief that judicial review is a power the Marshall court created ex nihilo with no Constitutional basis. It's not!

a lot of them are not actually good at journalism as much as they are good at hysteria, which gets engagement and boosts them. Getting facts correct is secondary. Plus many, Reed included, struggle to separate their impulses/feelings with facts, so everything gets filtered through how they feel

Again I think turning individual influencers with 0 editorial oversight into the main sources of info for entire marginalized groups is very bad for a number of reasons. One that it is not healthy for an individual to do nothing but report on their own oppression day in and day out, but also...

The problem with the AI discourse for me has always been that the staunchly anti-AI people are silly and wrong about a lot of basic facts while the staunchly pro-AI are insane and/or grifters

That and a thinking machine makes them think that humans aren't dominant. They'd rather be poor if they could feel special, it's like the "white working class" or patriarchy in rural areas

The thing that worries me most lately is that many people who know that “fascism is bad, actually” have also convinced themselves that AI tools must be eschewed as fake or impure. In a self-reinforcing loop, there is relatively little AI tooling and infra by “fascism is bad” folks.

Or maybe country music is itself a bubble, and the rest of us live outside of it. I wouldn’t say that about hip hop or any other popular genre. Country really is more cilturally sealed off from the rest of music culture in a way other popular music isn’t.

The problem is people with #BadLegalTakes not understanding the difference between civil liability and criminal liability, and with all sorts of Bad Movie Law takes, like thinking you can stick "negligence" into any arbitrary statute.

And it becomes even more pernicious 'cause eventually it's gender-coded. That's why we see folks like Hegseth and Cruz salivating over the masculine propagandist ads of the Russian military. (not that it's making Russia proud or anything in Ukraine lol)

and i have to wonder how much of this is just a fetishization of not only those jobs, but the kind of men who do them. so much of the left clearly wishes they were more masculine than they are, so they fetishize the wwc, but even the right has started doing it.

The worst thing Hank Stram* ever did was introduce the word matriculate to the footballing public. *I don’t actually know much about Hank Stram. Maybe he did worse. But that part is pretty annoying.

a lot of the things lurking beneath the surface of these discussions is the rudimentary insights that "impersonal rules, big organizations, and the ability to exit" are the most important innovations in human freedom

I am from a small town. That's why I don't trust small towns. I want a huge, dispassionate organization that just isn't corrupt that looks over that small town. I don't want a queer branch dividian complex, that's going to go bad

This is gonna be generative of manifold Bluesky moments since nobody can wrap their brain around the idea that most Christians globally are not white evangelicals and they are in fact a persecuted religious minority in many places. It’s just to a great extent America’s fault.

when people point out how unpleasant we are, we claim to be a small bean and deny everything we just did in public while also simultaneously saying the targets deserved it and threatening to hurt anyone that points out we are lying by doing the thing we deny doing.

no one has to organize to stop people who are dedicated to never ever having power and build their entire philosophy of life around excuses for not having it from taking over. nobody is afraid of that. you don't need explanations for why they don't have power, it's self-explanatory

I also just think that it's real bad how much the left has, in the past fifteen years and especially the past five, gone in hard on "blood and soil and ancestry are all super important and certain kinds of people should only live in the places they Belong" across multiple areas

One of the most unfortunate consequences for this is that doing research becomes a norm for undergrads in STEM but an exception for undergrads in the humanities. By claiming to “help” students by putting “pedagogy” before “research” we actually do them a disservice by drawing an artificial boundary.

Maybe the most overlooked part of Scott's Seeing Like a State is how increasing social legibility to the state facilitates not just nightmarish projects of social oppression but also literally utopian ones of public health. Our health utopia is made possible by the same tech enabling all that bad

The thing about living in the US West Coast is that like 85% of the things I care about sports-wise are at an extremely inconvenient time for me. UCLA and USC joining the Big Ten was the best thing to happen in years because it means IU games might be at a reasonable hour a couple of times a year.
