Got this in the mail today and very much looking forward to it: one of my favorite internet writers (and novelists! Based on the one so far anyway) on one of my Letterboxd 4 (and plus also @laurentheisen.bsky.social who’s pretty new to me and whom I’m looking forward to getting to know as well)
Hardcover copy of Emily James and Lauren Thiesen’s Every Time a Bell Rings, which is a dark teal or aqua with a gold wreath in the center and a black and white still from It’s a Wonderful Life in the center of the wreath. It’s at the end when George and Mary and Zuzu are smiling and filled up with the love of their friends and neighbors and Christmas. The book is placed on a lighter teal-colored steel patio table.

Schmitt’s team desperately trying to come up with the name Roy Marble and somehow make that equal checkmate
Screenshot of a Google Images search of Roy Marble. On the left is him in an Atlanta Hawks uniform and on the right he’s in an Iowa Hawkeyes warmup suit holding a trophy. It does not at all imply that Jack Smith went to a Hawks game or conspired with the philandering Atlantan politicians to take down the president (which I think was the insinuation?).

Even aside from the “Well, what were you expecting when you dressed that way?” nature of the argument, shouldn’t the galactic super AI brain company be able to see past a clever disguise?

The worst thing Hank Stram* ever did was introduce the word matriculate to the footballing public. *I don’t actually know much about Hank Stram. Maybe he did worse. But that part is pretty annoying.

I’m Peter, I work for the City of Austin, read books, and watch the football. I like it when it’s clear that a songwriter likes a word or a line so much they use it more than once: Michael Stipe and coriander, Ezra Koenig and “I don’t wanna live like this, but I don’t want to die”

If Iris Murdoch taught me anything, they need to look at the bottom of the lake
Photo of a Penguin edition of Murdoch’s The Bell. It’s white with an inset image from like a medieval or renaissance painting featuring two people embracing or kissing and maybe it’s two men, maybe a man and a woman, maybe a man or woman and an angel? Not sure but the book is fantastic and its bell is at the bottom of the lake. (That’s a spoiler maybe but not much of one.)

Screenshot of an Austin FC Instagram post with Biro mid-scissor kick to score what would be the winning goal. He’s like 4 1/2 feet off the ground and perpendicular to the turf. It’s a great shot and he’s amazing. Love that guy

Finished @alissawilkinson.bsky.social ‘s We Tell Ourselves Stories this morning. It’s great. To put too fine a point on it: It’s not “We tell ourselves stories to live” (complimentary). It’s “We tell ourselves stories” (derogatory).
Photo of the paperback of Alissa Wilkinson’s We Tell Ourselves Stories on a teal patio table. The cover photo of Didion has her holding, not wearing, sunglasses with her hands touching the sides of her face. She looks beautiful and troubled and like she understands some things.

Please consider picking up a copy of our latest LP, “For Younger Sons and Women Who Have No Money,” on your next trip to Tower Records. We’re really proud of it. I think it’s our best record yet.
Screenshot of about 3/4 the way through Middlemarch:

“Mrs. Cadwallader said, privately, 'You will certainly go mad in that house alone, my dear. You will see visions. We have all got to exert ourselves a little to keep sane, and call things by the same names as other people call them by. To be sure, for younger sons and women who have no money, it is a sort of provision to go mad: they are taken care of then. But you must not run into that. I daresay you are a little bored here with our good dowager; but think what a bore you might become yourself to your fellow-creatures if you were always playing tragedy queen and taking things sublimely. Sitting alone in that library at Lowick you may fancy yourself …”

Timeline synchronicity
Screenshot of Bluesky posts: the top two are the out-of-context end of a thread with Ryan Nanni saying “sorry but I’m a bird” and Matt Brown saying “go birds.” The third post is a retweet of a photo of a small brown bird with a sharp red beek staring directly, a bit intimidatingly, into one of those bird feeder cameras.

This was more believable coming from Robards
Screenshot from the Ron Howard Parenthood where Jason Robards is Steve Martin’s asshole dad. They’re on a set of little league bleachers having a heart to heart and Robards is talking about his youngest, Tom Hulce, who’s going to be killed by gangsters b/c he’s a gambler and a fuck up. Robards says “it doesn’t end when they’re 18 or 27 or 47. It never ends!” I saw it again on TCM the other day. It’s pretty good but Robards is amazing in it.

This guy:
Screenshot of Austin FC instagram Reel showing Guilherme Biro leaping to get on the end of a set piece but with his hand extended, not his head. That’s very much against the rule. But he’s such a fun and good-natured flake that his own team’s account posts it approvingly with the label “The Hand of Biro 🤌”

Started Middlemarch for the first time and Dorothea is already amazing. Sees Hooker and Milton as good matches. Anticipates the “it’s always two bitches saying exactly” tweet by a hundred and sixty years.
Screenshot of page 10 of George Eliot’s Middlemarch: “She felt sure that she would have accepted the judicious Hooker if she had been born in time to save him from that wretched mistake in matrimony; or John Milton when his blindness came on; or any of the other great men, whose odd habits it would have been glorious piety to endure; but an amiable, handsome baronet, who said ‘Exactly’ to her remarks even when she expressed uncertainty — how could he affect her as a lover?”

My favorite players have been Spanish midfielders who play for Arsenal (Cesc and Cazorla). But my favorite *type* of player is a fullback who’s a flake. [This post prompted by once again watching Austin FC featuring Guilherme Biro.] I love those guys.

Elinor Dashwood with a lesson for posters everywhere:
Pic of page 190 of Jane Austen’s Sense and Sensibility where Elinor, after listening to Robert Ferrars go on and on about some cottage or other indeed being large enough for a dance, does not rise to the bait:

“Elinor agreed to it all, for she did not think he deserved the compliment of rational response.”

Still from the sequence in Silence of the Lambs where Clarice is searching Hester Moffat’s storage unit. It’s the guy who manages the storage unit place and he’s weirdly wearing a bowler hat in 1991, has longish gray hair, a pretty great gray goatee/Van Dyke, a dark overcoat, and a mustard and Merlot scarf so that he looks like the faculty advisor for Gryffindor.

If you don’t read old stuff you’ll never discover that people in the olden days had the same thoughts and feelings and dreams and anxieties you do, sometimes articulated differently, sometimes exactly the same way. You are never truly alone in anything and old writings are a neon sign telling you so

Watching Andor Season 2 and, just a month after having the realization that Josh O’Connor’s my favorite actor, I’m realizing all over again that, no, it’s actually Kathryn Hunter who’s my favorite actor.
Photo of Kathryn Hunter in a Season 2 episode of Andor. She’s got this amazing, terrifying smile and twinkling/squinting eyes. There’s a moment in this episode where she says “Really” in a way that’s the funniest thing I’ve ever heard.
