Mockup of the Wiktionary entry for "liberal," modified so that the first definition reads "Uncool, specifically uncool in a way that reminds one of one's mother" with the example sentence "You'd never catch me listening to anyone like Joan Baez, that kind of music is so liberal."

Episcopalians don't really do megachurches so something had to fill the void.

I won't claim to be a Brazil Politics Understander, so could someone explain to me why everyone's acting like the outcome of the runoff is a foregone conclusion when Lula + two center/center-left parties > 50% in the first round?

This is exactly correct--hydraulic (and pneumatic) logic is a well-developed field, a network of AND and OR and XOR and NOT gates is a network of AND and OR and XOR and NOT gates regardless of the medium.

The psychologically-easiest way to resolve that tension and maintain those cherished ideological commitments is to deny that machines not only are not now but categorically cannot ever be capable of anything approaching human cognition, contrary evidence be damned.

Wordcel in the Streets, Bloodless Quant in the Sheets @kamonjonas.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
But once we became capable of creating ex nihilo machines that can reproduce a lot of our formerly-unique cognitive capabilities, to many people the latter belief became harder to do without invoking something that sounds a lot like "soul."

Wordcel in the Streets, Bloodless Quant in the Sheets @kamonjonas.bsky.social · 02/10/2026
I also think there's an intersecting ideological component to vis-a-vis a simultaneous commitment to secularism and that humans are sui generis. For centuries it's been very easy to maintain those beliefs side by side.

In a not-insignificant number of cases, people *are* able to work full-time on their passion projects because they are able to fund their work on that project by selling access to that project. Ending copyright would undermine the coincidence of interests that makes this possible.

Wordcel in the Streets, Bloodless Quant in the Sheets @kamonjonas.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
That won't actually create more of the "passion projects" you define as the alternative for the reason I explained in another post, though, and in fact will if anything tend in the opposite direction.

Not replying directly because they're apparently addressing a different issue, but one of my pet peeves is the belief that judicial review is a power the Marshall court created ex nihilo with no Constitutional basis. It's not!

The humane and compassionate alternative to the Republican plan for ethnic cleansing is to not do ethnic cleansing, which was in fact what the Democrats ran on: "vote for us so the ethnic cleansing Republicans are planning won't happen" was in fact the message, over and over.

Either people who want to do passion projects without getting paid have enough free time that they're already doing that, or they don't have enough free time in which case abolishing copyright won't magically change their life circumstances so they have more free time.

c) people want X for themselves, but not for anyone who's not 100% like them in every way, and they would rather not have X at all than see both themselves and *those people* get it too
021
Wordcel in the Streets, Bloodless Quant in the Sheets @kamonjonas.bsky.social · 01/10/2026
Because it turns out that usually what ends up happening is one or both of: a) people want X in the abstract but they don't want Y and Z that are necessary to make X actually happen b) people want X and Y both, but X and Y are mutually exclusive

But the different company isn't the one the strikers' grievance is with. Striking isn't a protest against the concept of doing work that benefits others, it's a negotiating tactic to encourage outcomes to your benefit with a specific counterparty.

a lot of them are not actually good at journalism as much as they are good at hysteria, which gets engagement and boosts them. Getting facts correct is secondary. Plus many, Reed included, struggle to separate their impulses/feelings with facts, so everything gets filtered through how they feel

Again I think turning individual influencers with 0 editorial oversight into the main sources of info for entire marginalized groups is very bad for a number of reasons. One that it is not healthy for an individual to do nothing but report on their own oppression day in and day out, but also...

I wonder if Dr. Bender is religious. Because if not, I think it might just be that she's ideologically committed to the uniqueness of humanity but also ideologically unable to invoke the concept of a "soul" in defense of that. So the only way out she sees is to insist that all this isn't real.

The thing that worries me most lately is that many people who know that “fascism is bad, actually” have also convinced themselves that AI tools must be eschewed as fake or impure. In a self-reinforcing loop, there is relatively little AI tooling and infra by “fascism is bad” folks.

And unlike farmers, those professions are more likely (still far from guaranteed) to be honest, hardworking members of society, unlike farmers who are almost always lazy, shirtless, immoral, dishonest, parasitic layabouts.

Or maybe country music is itself a bubble, and the rest of us live outside of it. I wouldn’t say that about hip hop or any other popular genre. Country really is more cilturally sealed off from the rest of music culture in a way other popular music isn’t.

The problem is people with #BadLegalTakes not understanding the difference between civil liability and criminal liability, and with all sorts of Bad Movie Law takes, like thinking you can stick "negligence" into any arbitrary statute.
