TIL active lightning rods are a thing. look at this angry bastard. it tries to, faster than Zeus himself, fire its own lightning (early streamer emission innit) back at the sky to beckon a strike to hit it instead of something more important. long live the fantastical hubris of NF C 17-102

his name is lethargic. he's an IRC chatbot I wrote in 2011 and has been through IRC, skype, and is now on discord (in private servers with friends.) the algorithm has been unchanged since the beginning.
Lethargic’s algorithm

Lethargic’s primary response generator uses a bespoke algorithm that uses neither templates nor markov chains.
Take the user’s input:
Hello lethargic, how are you doing today?
Then pick a random message from a dataset of old IRC logs
brb throwing my computer against the wall
Then we interlace these two sentences, one word at a time, excluding ending punctuation:
Hello brb lethargic, throwing how my are computer you against doing the today wallLethargic's algorithm continued
Hello brb lethargic, throwing how my are computer you against doing the today wall
We replace “lethargic” with “me” and other pronouns so that they are inverted (like ELIZA)
Hello brb me, throwing how your are computer me against doing the today wall
Finally we pass this amalgamation into google translate a bunch of times through multiple languages to get our response:
Hey, wait a minute, how's your computer doing today after I hit my head against a wall?

One of the more insidious phrasings I've seen with the Dems/trans rights discourse lately is the idea that trans people are being greedy and demanding a "maximalist" approach to trans rights. No, you cannot call the state of rights American trans people had as recently as 2023 "maximalist," sorry.

One of Hideo Kojima's real talents is that he would have exactly this idea but the stew would be dropped off by a drone that sings a little jingle which can alert enemies if they're in range. You then get a phone call from a nuclear scientist who warns you not to eat too much starch and dairy.

i love seeing creative qr code designs, so i made this guide explaining what tricks you can (and can't!) do with qr codes while still keeping them very much readable have fun and make cool stuff!!
(ADVANCED) Guide to (not) fucking up qr codes
...while still making them look cool asf!
by Lyra Rebane

(1) Just have the QR code as-is, works the best!

(2) But leave some white padding, otherwise some scanners can't scan the code!

(3) Recolor the code using a light and dark color!

(4) But don't invert the colors, some scanners can't handle this.

Everything tested with: GrapheneOS, Samsung, iOS, Binary Eye

Page 1/4(1) Depending on the error correction you can cover up to 30% of the data in the QR code. This will make the QR harder to scan, but it should still work on all scanners.

(2) But this only applies to the data and ec (green). You can also cover one of the format info parts (yellow)

(3) Counter-intuitively, it also only applies to entire codewords (bytes) at once. Therefore you should make sure to never mess up over 30% of the codewords, even by a single pixel!

(4) For example, I added a sneaky one pixel thick worm onto this QR code, which makes it unscannable!

(5) But this QR code I added that chonky snake with a pride scarf onto remains perfectly readable!

Page 2/4(1) To scan QR codes, scanners will first find the three locators (blue) and then use the zebras (red) to create a grid over the code.

(2) This means that you can stretch, skew, or rotate your codes because the grid still stays intact!
Don't go too overboard with this, as some scanners can't handle extreme transformations.
Pretty much just make sure that straight lines can still be drawn!

(3) However, transformations that don't retain the grid - such as bends - can make the QR code unreadable. Keep this in mind when putting your QR codes on curved real world objects, such as posts and pipes.

(4) If you need to draw curved lines for a grid, the code cannot be scanned.

Note: the GrapheneOS stock Camera app might struggle with certain skews/rotations

Page 3/4
(1) QR code scanners use the grid to pinpoint the center parts of pixels, which means that the rest of the pixel does not matter!

(2) This means that you can shape your pixels however you want, provided that the middle stays unchanged.

(3) Or you can fill the rest of the QR code with a different image or even pure noise!
Note that a QR code like this could break after resizing or image compression, so use with caution!

(4) As with the other tricks, this reduces scannability, so make sure to test it with multiple devices, especially if you’re combining all of the tricks into one ultra QR code!

(5) This example still scans, but may not work properly or reliably everywhere!

literally every history question has been asked in there and thoroughly, *comprehensively* answered already
Post on r/askhistorians from 7 hours ago: At what point in history could chicken nuggets realistically have been made?post redirecting user to post from r/trevor_culley from 4 years agoThere's really not much to chicken nuggets. Ground chicken mashed into a small clump, breaded, and deep fried. Everything you need for a basic, no frills chicken nugget would have been available to you in the Indus Valley Civilization by at least 3500 BCE if not earlier.

Let's start with chicken because that's kind of crucial. Red jungle fowl were first captured and kept by humans in their native region of southeast Asia and the neighboring islands (ie Indonesia) around 8000 BCE. Strictly speaking, these weren't chickens yet because domestication is a long process, but the novelty of this cool new bird spread quickly and red jungle fowl arrived near the Ganges River by about 7000 BCE. By 4000 BCE, true domestic chickens were being raised and eaten in the Indus Valley, just as the early signs of agriculture and urbanization were starting up.

Those early signs of agriculture included the introduction of domesticated wheat, which had been spreading across the world from its own starting point with early agriculture in Anatolia and upper Mesopotamia around 10,000 BCE. Basically from the start, wheat was ground up into flower, mixed with water, and cooked into some very basic bread. So both flower and bread crumbs are available now too, though the bread was usually flatbread, so expect a different texture.

India is home to all sorts of herbs and spices you could use to add flavor, but the only thing I think would probably be crucial to your chicken nugget breading is salt. Not to worry though, the ruined city known today as Kerala-no-dhoro has you covered. Located on the coast of modern Gujarat and founded around 3700 BCE, it was a center of salt production by collecting and evaporating sea water.

(Answer goes on for another 2000 characters but I'm approaching the word limit)
