Today in 1967, the Outer Space Treaty entered into force. Now boasting 112 states parties (it started with just 62), the treaty guarantees the peaceful exploration of space for all, bans militarization of the Moon, and outlaws nuclear and other WMDs in orbit, on celestial bodies, and in outer space.
A black and white photograph showing representatives of the Soviet Union (Ambassador to the United States Anatoly F. Dobrynin), United Kingdom (Minister of State for Foreign Affairs and Permanent Representative of the United Kingdom to the United Nations Sir Patrick Dean), and the United States sitting at a table in the White House to sign the Outer Space Treaty on January 27, 1967. President Lyndon Johnson, seated at the right end of the table, looks on as Secretary of State Dean Rusk signs the treaty.

As someone writing a book about the execution of two US sailors in World War II, I have plenty of thoughts about the plan to livestream Nidal Hasan's execution--above all, that public displays of this sort have nothing to do with deterring future attacks.

An American President everyone: It’s a small price to pay to let an enemy take out a major American city and kill millions. I don’t know if even the most rabid Cold Warriors would say such a thing in private let alone publicly. And that’s saying something.

I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

Archaeologist here. We can't generally carbon date pottery, unless you include some good carbon materials like shell temper. And because of nuclear testing and fossil fuels we don't use carbon dating for 19th/20th/21st century materials. Better to write the date on it.
