In my old job I really enjoyed occasionally visiting uni campuses in other countries This is the wonderful Academy of Fine Arts building at Myśliwiecka Street 8, Warsaw. Built in the 20s and associated with architecture from the 50s (eg some ‘Team 10’ folks) Had a great vibe #architecture

4 years ago I visited the disused Victorian train tunnels at Oxendon and got properly freaked out by a figure stood waving at the other end 🤷‍♂️ 👻

Why yes, using the correct beer glass IS satisfying (Also it’s mad that they have to drop Tremens from the name in the UK because of regulatory rules about use of the clinical term)

A mate asked for accessible non-fiction recommendations after enjoying London Falling, so this is what I sent back 🤷‍♂️ 1. Turn Off Your Mind (2001) by Gary Lachman. A solid overview of the dark and occult strands of the 60s written by the OG Blondie bassist and Fortean staple. A lot of FUN #booksky

Saw a lovely post saying “the point of art is to connect with another human”, but it’s not even that. Art is expression of the human condition, as selfish as it might be, and it’s often wholly selfish

Rewatched THE TERMINATOR (1984) as it was on TV last night. Retro This time I was particularly struck by the obvious influence of John Carpenter. It’s evident in the detail (an inhuman killing machine ala Myers, synth score, police station siege etc) but also in the VIBE 🤷‍♂️ A total banger #filmsky

Now reading: The Assassin (1928) by Liam O’Flaherty I read The Informer (1925) by him last year and absolutely loved it, and so far this is just as good An intimate portrait of a hitman on the streets of Dublin, inspired by real events - the assassination of Kevin O'Higgins a year before #booksky

A painting of a rural scene with a party of well to do people in silk dresses and suits having a lovely outing. There are tall trees with bare trunks and lots of huge rocks.

Been working my way through Jan Švankmajer's short films. One that has particularly stayed with me is the quietly chilling Buñuelian allegory The Garden (1968), probably his most overtly political work. A man is invited to a country estate with a perimeter fence made of silent human 'volunteers'...
People forming a daisy chain around a grand country estate. The short is a biting Kafkaesque critique of totalitarian conformity and collectivism. It mirrors the stifling mediocrity, absolute submission, and absurd normalisation of oppression under Czechoslovakian communism.

Now reading - The Restraint of Beasts (1998) by Magnus Mills Recommended by a friend and I’m loving it so far. A pitchblack deadpan comedy anxiety nightmare, like a 90s Wake in Fright There’s also something YBA about it, I suppose. Nineties Nihilism and the crossover with Gordon Burn etc #booksky

Still reeling from finishing the 7 Up series last night And whilst I knew Michael Apsted also directed feature films, I had no idea he directed this gritty 70s British crime film THE SQUEEZE that I’ve seen some of you bang on about? Really need to watch it!
