It is Book Quote Wednesday and the word is 'treat'. Your treat for today is an extract from 'Incoming' by JL George, one of the many fine stories in They Are Still Here, on pre-order now: wizardstowerpress.co...
Her people lived beneath the waves. They had done for centuries, since her father left dry land. Rhys Dwfn was his name—Rhys of the deep, the wise, the long-lived. He’d warned them to stay away from the world above. Land-dwellers had never done him any good, and surely they’d treat his daughters no better.
But Rhys had grown set in his ways. The longer he lived, the more adamant he was that the human world would never change.
He was not exactly wrong. They saw the evidence of that every day, washed into the sea—all the land-dwellers’ waste, plastics that never rotted as live things do, nets that caught up the creatures of the sea and throttled the life from them. Oil, sometimes, an acrid, clinging poison. And sewage, choking clouds of effluent that lingered in the water for days, making the sea-dwellers sick, so that they came to dread the rain.

The Crooked Medium’s Guide to Terror
A striking book cover with the title and author name dominating.
The lettering and detail are pale against a dark and sinister red-brown. The Title is in large Victorian lettering emphasising the word Terror by size of font and red added to letters – not dripping blood! - and framed by gold. Three roundels show icons related to the book; left, a half folded cutthroat razor streaked with red, top right, pearl jewellery with three pearls and a pearl effect locket; bottom right a burning railwayman’s lamp.
The effect is striking and Victorian.

The cover of Wiz-4 a novella anthology from Wizards Tower Press
The book shows the two novellas by dividing the cover into two triangles the line being top left to bottom right corners.
Left is Top Tips for Loving a Lizard. It shows a jolly green Godzilla holding a smaller ginger King Kong, with a big red heart. There’s a definite more than best friends vibe.
Right is Marooned off Ceres which shows a red moon, a space turtle and a female astronaut who is black. It’s not framed to feel like a threat.

Great news for a client! I can (and indeed do, as you’ll see from the press release) heartily recommend this novel. As Cheryl notes, I did my book doctoring job on this, but it was basically a light edit on a book already at an eminently publishable standard.

Book Quote Wednesday's word is 'knew' #BookQW #BookSky Dan Mackmain has no idea what made the noise he's just heard. He'd never have guessed the challenges he'll face, way beyond his skills and experience. Did you know The Green Man's Holiday ebook is a Kindle 99p offer now, price-matched elsewhere?
Cover art by Ben Baldwin shows a creature crouching in a low tunnel entrance lined with grey stones and partly hidden by green undergrowth and white flowers. The creature has pale skin covered in sparse black hair and it looks a bit like an ape, a bit like a bear, and completely unlike either of those.

Book extract reads: As well as a folder of information about the cottage for visitors, I saw a shallow wicker basket filled with leaflets. Fin started sorting through them.
‘There’s a lot of ancient stuff around here. A couple of hillforts. A Roman villa. This one has a couple of circular walks we could do, if we fancied looking at standing stones.’
She tossed leaflets for Wookey Hole and the Cheddar caves back in the basket. She knew I wouldn’t be interested in those. I’m too tall to be comfortable in dark, cramped spaces underground.
‘Right.’ I closed my eyes and wondered why it’s so hard to find furniture with a back tall enough for someone like me. I shifted sideways and slid down the cushions until I could rest my head properly. That made drinking my tea awkward, but I felt my headache easing.
I listened to the soft rustle of paper and Fin making faint noises of surprise and approval as she found something interesting. Then I heard something else. I opened my eyes.
Fin was staring at me, concerned. ‘Was that a cat?’

Book Quote Wednesday's word is 'knew' #BookQW #BookSky Dan Mackmain knows the value of doing his homework. But how much reading will be enough to avoid the trap of thinking he knows more than he does? For a wide range of UK and international purchase options - wizardstowerpress.com/books-2/book...
Cover art by Ben Baldwin for The Green Man's Debt by Juliet E McKenna. A grey wolf with pale eyes stands in the shadows of a derelict building with a black and white tiled floor. The wolf is looking straight at you. Its snarl reveals blood on its teeth and jaw.
Book extract reads: Blithehurst House has a fine collection of books on folklore. They range from seventeenth-century antiquarians’ speculations to thick volumes written by earnest Victorians and Edwardians who had enough money and time to search for supposedly lost ancient wisdom hidden in fairy tales. I concentrated on those, rather than reading anything later which started with the assumption that none of the stories could be true. We knew better.
I ignored the frankly bonkers chapters where those books tried to trace every tale and mythical figure back to some grand unified theory of forgotten gods from Mesopotamia whose rites had spread through prehistoric Europe. I was interested in local myths and superstitions which might help me deal with whatever we met in Ireland. Thankfully, the folklorists had written down pretty much everything they were told by ordinary people at their firesides or over a pint of beer in a tavern. Even when I was certain the locals in the countryside had been taking the piss out of the posh and patronising townies.

Quote: It was a while since I’d been to Perren. I knew tensions had been increasing, though not why. I hadn’t realised it was that bad. I’d grown up near the border. Creeping dread coiled up my spine at the idea of war, spilling into the farms and valleys of my childhood.

It is Book Quote Wednesday and the word is 'knew'. This week we have for you the opening paragraph of Sophia McDougall's hilarious middle grade novel, Mars Evacuees (our edition is UK only, the rest of the world already has it). wizardstowerpress.co...
When the polar ice advanced as far as Nottingham, my school was closed and I was evacuated to Mars. Miss Clatworthy called me into her office to tell me about it. I’d had in the back of my mind that she might be going to say the aliens had finally shot down my mother’s spacefighter, so on the whole I took the actual news fairly well. And that’s even though I knew Mars wasn’t really ready for normal people to live on yet. They’d been terraforming it for years and years, but even after everything they’d squirted or sprayed or puffed at it, and all the money they’d spent on toasting it gently like a gigantic scone, you could still only sort of breathe the air and sort of not get sunburned to death. So you can see that the fact someone had decided I would be safer there than say, Surrey, was not a sign that the war with the aliens was going fantastically well.

Book extract reads: The Hunter stopped walking. The birds fell silent. A long-eared owl soared up from a cluster of silver birch saplings and headed for the horizon. A massive animal reared up from a hollow that had been hidden by the little trees and the swathes of bright green, arrowhead-shaped leaves hanging from their twisted branches.
It was some sort of deer, and it was sodding enormous. As far as I could tell at this distance, that hump rising above its shoulder blades was roughly the same height as my head. The beast must need those muscles and its thick neck to counterbalance its antlers. They had to be more than three metres across. Where the Hunter’s branched tree-like and narrowed to points, the huge deer’s were broad and flat, fringed with lethal-looking spikes. Like a fallow deer’s, if you could scale a fallow buck up to more than twice its natural height and eight times the bulk.

book extract reads: ‘That makes sense,’ Fin agreed. ‘But how do we know we’re not adding two and two to make nine?’
‘Give me a minute.’ I stood up and passed Not-Alice to her, careful not to knock the tall coffee glasses over. I walked to the far end of the beer garden. A notice in the bar said the apples from this small orchard were sent to the local cider maker. I wondered if that meant the factory we had seen driving through Shepton Mallet or a smaller operation. Regardless, whoever looked after these trees had done a good job thinning this year’s fruit.
I rested my palm lightly on the closest branch, speaking quietly. ‘I could really use your help.’
The tree let me know it was willing to cooperate. It felt sharper somehow, wary and more aloof than the ones in the cottage garden. Imagine the difference between a placid riding school pony and one used to roaming moorland.
Regardless, the cider apple tree showed me what I needed to know.

It is Book Quote Wednesday and the word is 'tree'. This extract is from Ellen Mellor's story, 'Marooned off Ceres', which is in the forthcoming Wiz Duo #4 wizardstowerpress.co...
‘I do not have a spaceship,’ Mother said.
‘But you’re not native to Ceres? How did you get here? How do you plan on leaving?’
‘Allow me to show you. Please, think of somewhere on Earth. Somewhere that you would like to be now. Somewhere special to you. Picture it in as much detail as you can and try to give that picture to me.’
I closed my eyes. It seemed like forever before I was able to calm myself enough to focus on a single place. I could feel my excitement rising as the stories from my pulp SF novels rose in my mind—teleportation? Hyperspace highways? It even briefly crossed my mind that she was just using this as an excuse to disappear and when I opened my eyes she would be gone, leaving me stranded here. Slowly, I pieced together an image of the old horse chestnut tree that sat in the corner of the garden at home.
