If I was in charge of an educational institution and learned that a technology fostered “cognitive surrender” in young people, I’d like to think I would do everything in my power to keep it away from the young people who pay my institution to educate them. But I guess I’m just a weirdo.
Students are using artificial intelligence for everything, including cheating, and a recent M.I.T. report said the technology was creating
"cognitive surrender."

August 18th is #HeliumDiscoveryDay, so the #ConnectedAtBirth #etymology of the week is SUN/SOLAR/HELIUM #wotd #sun #solar #helium #eclipse
During a solar eclipse in 1868 astronomer Joseph N. Lockyer (among others) discovered the element helium by studying the light of the sun, and etymologically this makes sense. Sun comes from Old English sunne, from Proto-Germanic *sunnon (related to *sunthaz “sun-side” eventually giving us the word south), ultimately from the Proto-Indo-European root *s(u)wen- a variant form of *sawel- “sun”. The variant form *s(e)wol- led to Latin sol “sun” from which we get solar. The suffixed form *sawel-yo- led to Greek helios “sun”, and it’s from that Greek word that Lockyer coined the term helium.

There you have it.
so, (barely) reading between the lines of what Twitch's staff said:

1) they were forced by Amazon to add the AI training setting and to make it opt-out, because the overlords know perfectly well there's no reason anyone would ever opt-in

2) the actual Twitch staff who run Twitch do not like this and are of the same mind about it as all of you

3) Taking the time to opt-out, even if you don't really stream, gives them data to take to meetings with their overlords to prove that Twitch users dislike AI and pushing it too hard will drive people from the site.

The "but what about making sure artists get credit?" objection to copyright reform is especially irritating because treating moral rights (i.e., the right to attribution, etc.) as descending from or strictly subordinate to commercial exploitation rights is a uniquely American perspective. (1/3)

Classics friends, a colleague and I are trying to put together a pedagogy panel for CAMWS on working with grad students specifically - if you teach in a grad or post-bac program we'd love more submissions!
While pedagogy panels are a common feature of Classics conferences, most focus on instruction at the K-12 or undergraduate levels, with comparatively little discussion devoted to the way we teach graduate students. Many undergraduate programs operate under the reasonable assumption that their typical student will not seek graduate training, meaning that those who do continue often need dedicated support while they adjust to a new set of duties and expectations. At the same time, recent changes in the higher education landscape have inspired a great deal of reflection on the nature and purpose of graduate training in Classics, with the result that many programs have significantly altered their degree plans. While goals and priorities continue to evolve, numerous factors affect the successful implementation of strategic changes. This panel seeks to bring such ongoing conversations to the level of praxis and investigate how best to meet the needs of today’s graduate students both in the classroom and in the supervision of their developing research and teaching skills.

We seek papers from instructors with recent experience teaching and mentoring graduate students. Papers should be practical in nature and may include such topics as: differential language abilities in graduate classrooms, assignments that introduce professional research/teaching skills, effective preparation for qualifying exams, strategies for fostering independent learning, integrating diverse career preparation into coursework, special considerations for post-bac students, etc., and (if you must) AI in graduate research.
If you are interested in participating in this panel, please send an abstract of approximately 300 words to Dan Leon (dleon@illinois.edu) by Wednesday August 5 at 5:00 PM Central Time.
