This tragedy happened over nine years ago. It's hard to avoid the question... If this hadn't been poor people in a wealthy area, would it really have taken a decade to bring anyone deemed responsible to account for their actions or inactions? share.google/2yfjFryZmqOE...

Pope Innocent III,who died in 1216, spoke of a certain kind of older man, who is "easily provoked", "will believe anything and question nothing", is "stingy and greedy" and "praises the good old days and hates the present." Reform UK's voter base has been knocking around for a very long time.

It’s a mark of the corruption of our whole way of thinking about the world that trying to meet a planetary emergency is routinely described as “ideological”, while continuing to accelerate it is presented as “pragmatic” and “economic”.

I've been to a lot of party conferences. Burnham's speech was the best I've heard in a long time. It was emotive but with major policy announcements and a clear diagnosis of how he thinks the country has taken the wrong path. "Public control" is how he thinks it can be put right.

Citizenship should never have been allowed to become a conditional and impermanent gift from the state to the individual. It is a permanent status, universal and equal to all that have it, that brings obligations of care and protection *from* the state as well as to it.
