Finding an executioner could be difficult, and officials would do whatever they could to find (and avoid being) one. In northern England, for instance, there are cases in which people who had their goods stolen from them were required to perform the execution if they wish to get their goods back.

Exactly this. And in fact, many models *have* been created this way, and decades of prior machine learning systems *were* created this way, consensually. These things are choices! People are STILL working this way! It’s not just that a better world is possible — it already EXISTS. We can nurture it.

Some 👀 #cholera findings in the WHO's "Cholera Annual Report, 2025" www.who.int/news/item/29...
Screenshot reading "Cholera deaths increased by 30% in 2025, despite fewer cases being reported to the World Health Organization (WHO).

In 2025, 47 countries reported 451 499 cholera cases and 7870 deaths to WHO. This is the highest number of annual cholera deaths reported to WHO since 1999. These figures reflect surveillance data reported to WHO and not the actual global burden of cholera, which is estimated to be substantially higher as many cases go unreported.

Seven countries – Angola, Bangladesh, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Nigeria, South Sudan, Sudan and Yemen – accounted for around 90% of all reported cholera cases and deaths globally. The WHO African Region reported the largest burden, with a 34% increase in cases and a 58% increase in deaths compared with 2024. "

On the one hand, it's just dumb. Universities are, in fact, real, and they exist in the world. American universities employ about 3x as many people as there are active duty servicemembers, so if soldiers are "real," then so are academics.

Plus ça change...?
Screenshot of a book page from The Anglo-Norman Language and its Contexts (chapter by Curry, Bell, Chapman, King, and Simpkin): "...often been suggested that language was considered an expression of national identity in the context of England's late medieval wars. On five occasions, the crown called on the support of parliament with the justification that the French intended to invade England and destroy the English language. The first is found in the writ of summons in 1295 (Stubbs 1913: 480) when Edward I was at war with the French as well as the Scots and facing a rebellion in Wales (lin-guam anglicam... omnino de terre delere proponit). The other four are to be found within the parliament rolls themselves: in 1344, four years after Edward III had declared himself king of France (a destruire la langue Engleys); 1346, just after his victory at the battle of Crécy (a destruire et anentier tote la nacion et la lange Engleys); 1377, when English successes in France were at a low ebb and when the French were preparing to launch raids on the south coast (et d'ouster de tout la langue Engleys); and under similar circumstances in 1380 (d' ouster oultreement la lange Engleise).+ There is some irony that the argument was expressed on the first occasion in Latin and on the next four in Anglo-French. In 1431 the notion appeared in English, not with direct reference to the threat of French invasion but calling to mind the Welsh rebellion of Owain Glyndür in the first decade of the fifteenth century. It is possible, of course, that on earlier occasions the arguments had been rehearsed in parliament in English. Here, as in so many other contexts in the later middle ages, we face a major problem - that the language of record is not necessarily the language of use."

How did this guy pass the job interview at Anthropic as a “researcher”?

Quote tweeting a tweet that says:
Rohan Paul
@rohanpaul_ai
Jacob Coxon's next interview on CBS News (ex Anthropic+Open AI researcher who resigned)

"We can't just unplug it because it could be copying itself over to other computers. Like it's not that difficult to find yourself because an AI is just code. It could transfer itself over the internet to a different place and then you unplug it here, but it's actually still over there and maybe it makes 10,000 copies of itself and they're all cooperating."
