A friend of mine works in AI and thinks bad things are about to happen. He sold his home and moved his family out the country. He said that if you own a home in a walkable San Francisco neighborhood near a taqueria with good veggie options, you should sell your home for super cheap right now.

Apocalyptic AI fantasies are a stupid, annoying distraction from its real problems
The people who work in AI are not gurus and most of their predictions have been wrong. Working in the industry makes them less reliable commentators, not more

I am in academia only because and till the time it is fun for me. For some people, the thrill of competition may be fun, but all I want to do is sit down with like-minded people and work on interesting problems. Not to beat someone else, but because those problems are interesting to us. [1/2] 🧪⚛️

🌕🌒Early tomorrow morning, between 4.33 am and 6.52 am, there will be a partial #lunareclipse. At its peak (at 6.12 am), 96% of the Moon will be in the Earth’s shadow, giving it a coppery colour.

The Earth's magnetic field is generated by vigorous convection in the outer core through a process called the geodynamo. We simulate this process on big supercomputers and can reproduce a lot of the features of the Earth's magnetic field! 🧪⚛️⚒️⛰️🌏
Picture shows the Earth's surface as transparent and cut-out from 0 to 90 deg longitude. Inside is shown convecting outer core colored with temperature. The whole picture has magnetic field lines going through tracing roughly a dipole on the outside and complex shapes inside the outer core where dynamo generation takes place.

☀️🌑The #solareclipse on 12 August 2026 will be visible in #Belgium as a partial eclipse. Seen from here, the Moon will cover 90% of the Sun. ℹ️ In Brussels, it will begin at 7.18 pm, reaching its peak at 8.13 pm. Make sure to find a spot with a clear view of the western horizon to watch it.
The Sun nearly totally covered by a black disk, showing only part of it on the right.

A gas giant planet like #Jupiter can 'pulsate' at many different frequencies. We call them 'eigenmodes'. This is how one such #eigenmode might look like. They can be excited by the tidal pull of Jupiter's moons as they orbit the #planet. I will present this work at #EPSC2026 🧪 🔭
a panel showing the amplitude of a pulsation in a gas giant planet in three different directions (radial, north-south, and azimuthal). Blue is no motion, red is max motion. The pattern of the pulsation motion is symmetrical across the equator, and it's a bit checkered-like, with some voids too, forming what I think are beautiful patterns.

See the alternating warm and cold patches in the Northern mid-latitudes? That's the imprint of a quasi-stationary Rossby wave (i.e. oscillations in the jet stream). It's rare to see it so clearly in a monthly-average temperature map.

AI will just produce what it's prompted to. It will treat everything and anything as significant. But ... it mostly isn't. So we get manuscripts of superficial sophistication that report little of consequence. It's just clutter and cacophony, but styled enough that it could pass peer review. 5/
