Went on a hike a few days back on the Pacific Crest Trail to celebrate some wins! The little Belknap Crater flow happened just 1700 years ago in central Oregon. Surreal landscape.

I WAS JUST ON THE BBC INTERNATIONAL NEWS PROGRAM!!! Don't worry, you didn't miss much, the questions were really just the announcer wanting to confirm it's not aliens. :)

New Horizons is now *three days away* from shutting off its two heliophysics instruments, simply because NASA has not provided the $2M in funding it had promised to the mission last year or this year. There is no science basis for shutting these off. Our earlier coverage:

Classes start tomorrow for the quarter (yes, we start late in Oregon!) so the campus is filled w parents helping their kids move in for the first time. I’d say in 90% of cases it’s obvious the parents are more nervous than the students. 😅

Yet again, USA: Get the kids their shots. Get yourselves your shots if you have not had them. Get your immunity checked if it is doubt. Require that the state governments expand vaccine mandates. And require that Congress #ImpeachRFKJr and remove him & all the lethal quacks with him.

Y’all, I am so fucking tired of people assuming I’m pregnant. 3+ people assumed I was this week, all in work/ conference situations where I had to just politely explain that I had twins 6 months ago over going off on how rude they’re being. Really a self esteem killer guys ☹️

If @science.org is covering it, I guess I should share something here- we have for the first time definitively detected radio emission from a planet around another star! 🔭🧪🎢 What does this mean? Details in thread! (But TL;DR- still not aliens) 🧵 www.sciencenews.org/article/exop...

I always say I help “a couple people a month” for career advice on Reddit (on astro/ general STEM careers), but never actually counted. Two weeks ago out of curiosity I started a counter on my phone to keep track. Anyway I just answered my 12th query. Guess it’s more than a couple! 🔭🧪

Today on the #arXiv: @kortizceballos.bsky.social, Berger, and @whereisyvette.bsky.social 2026, "Discovery of radio emission from the exoplanet β Pictoris b" - arxiv.org/abs/2609.16720. Beta Pic b shows up quite neatly in L- and S-band radio, with bursts that imply a kilogauss (!) magnetic field.

Hi folks! I'm applying for a fellowship that requires me to list my h-index. As someone who DNGAF about these, does one typically provide the h-index for first author papers only or all papers you've been on? Obviously, one is significantly bigger than the other. 🔭🧪🎢

Getting feisty on the ArXiv this morning- "More than half of recent astronomy papers are written with language-model assistance" arxiv.org/abs/2609.10664 That said, if their model is actually correct the authors ought to go into the "check for cheating" racket, as that's a huge growth space rn 🔭

First day back from maternity leave! I was really lucky with the timing of summer to take five months off with my twins, and still get teaching release this fall, which is positively European! But it’s exciting to get back in the lab and think about research and see what everyone’s up to 🤩

Went outside tonight to enjoy clear and dark skies with the Milky Way visible. At any given point there were at least two satellites as bright as bright stars also tracking through the sky. It makes me sad and angry that we had to give up a magical dark sky without having a chance to give input.

So I’m gonna brag- we just finished a 9 hour trip from PA to my parents in NH (~6.5 hours driving) w no meltdowns from the 2.5yr old or 4mo twins. This is after a 13 hour travel day Thursday where everyone was also super good! Not saying we didn’t have help, but I am so proud of my little girls 🥰

IT WORKED! Thousands of you wrote your senators, and the Senate passed a funding bill pausing the OMB rule that would hand political appointees control over science grants. But it's not over: the House's bill doesn't include the pause. Tell your Rep to back the Senate's language: planet.ly/cPbNu

Storytime! Six years ago I stitched the little bunnies on shoes on the left for my nephew. They came back to us (hence pic is my daughter wearing them), but I bought a second pair when I got the OG ones I never stitched. Anyway, I have twins now, so just stitched little seal shoes for baby 2! 🦭🐰

To be clear- this is catastrophic for radio astronomy, not just in the UK. If you shut down a facility like this not only do we use access to the facility, dozens (hundreds?) of jobs are gone and with it expertise that never comes back. Please write to your MP if you’re in the UK! 🔭🧪🎢

My Dutch in laws just did an American RV trip and it’s hilarious listening to my BIL talk about his observations of America. “Wow, Americans love to set fires! 9am at the campsite, time to build a fire! And what a lot of dogs in America named Quiet, because that’s what everyone shouts at their dog!”

I find it wild that I moved to Oregon two years ago from New England, but it’s been legit more smoky out east than here since the move. Probably a matter of time before we get smoked out here too, but who would have guessed this a few years ago?

Working on some proposals for the MeerKAT radio telescope in South Africa (deadline tomorrow). It forever makes me happy that instead of shying away from the name some astronomers said "screw that, we ARE gonna name our telescope after meerkats because life is more fun this way!" 🧪🔭
