“Air pollution fell substantially as Paris restricted car traffic and made way for parks, people-streets and bike-lanes.” Better for the climate, better for health, better for livability and quality of life. Common sense. Such a no-brainer, it’s remarkable that more cities HAVEN’T done the same.

This is an important new paper. When we allocate responsibility for emissions, it's normally in terms of consumption. We tally up direct household emissions (eg, from household energy use) plus the emissions embodied in all the stuff that a household consumes.

When utilized in literature review, LLMs consistently 1. fail to mention female authors in female-led literatures, 2. insist that men are more influential or more heavily cited when this is contradicted by objective citation counts, and 3. attribute women’s work to hallucinated male scholars.

Oxford, the longest running continuous weather station in UK history, with temperature observations stretching back to 1815, has preliminarily broken its maximum temperature record for May yesterday by OVER 3ºC with a temperature of 33.7ºC. Unprecedented in its 211-year history.
Spaghetti chart showing Oxford Radcliffe Observatory daily maximum temperatures for every day of the year from 1815 to 2026. 211 years of historical data are shown as very faint grey lines tracing a seasonal cycle from around 5°C in winter to a summer peak of roughly 25–30°C in July and August. A blue smoothed 30-day mean line highlights the average annual temperature cycle. The 2026 line is shown in bold red, running from January through to late May before spiking sharply upward to reach 33.7°C on 26 May, well above the entire historical grey envelope for that time of year. A single dashed red reference line marks the previous May record of 30.6°C set on 29 May 1944. The 2026 reading exceeds this by 3.1°C and, in statistical terms, is the 6th most anomalous maximum temperature in Oxford's 211-year record, ranking as the most anomalous May maximum ever observed and coming within 0.6°C of the all-time June record of 34.3°C set in 1976.

Will man ever go to the moon?
talkie-1930
Man will never go to the moon. The idea of visiting that satellite of the earth is preposterous, and can only be entertained by persons of very weak intellect. In the first place, the moon is 240,000 miles distant from the surface of the globe, and the journey, at forty miles an hour, without stoppage, would occupy fifteen days and nights. But, supposing the traveller arrived safely at his destination, what could he do when he got there? He could not breathe at such an elevation, and if he could, he would find the temperature many degrees below zero. He would be totally unable to support life, and in a short time must inevitably perish. The moon has no atmosphere, and consequently no water. There are no animals and no vegetables; and, in short, the lunar globe is a desolate waste. So much for personal experience of lunar matters; but, supposing it were possible to live there, how could the lunatic return? He could not come back in a balloon, for balloons will not rise above five miles; and to walk back would be even a more tedious operation than to go forward. The moon, therefore, must be left to the contemplation of astronomers, and let it remain unknown to the rest of the world.
