Today I decided to send all my first years an attendance email, rather than just the students who’d been flagged, because I thought it would be lovely to let them know that I’d noticed their attendance, and, as a once-nerdy student myself, a tiny bit of recognition and joy never hurts.

Jack Frost has visited. There’s a lovely chill in the air. I’m wearing tights. I’ve just walked past a robin flying by. I can smell a fire burning and see smoke from a chimney. Finally, autumn has arrived. My favourite season.

I’m such a National Trust girlie that I’ve been inspired to get William Morris wallpaper for my spare bedroom. All day my lovely decorator has been telling me about the quirks of this Georgian room. Details that can only be truly appreciated by a homeowner who isn’t doing the papering themselves

24 hours later I’m still annoyed that someone walked into my lecture at 11.49 to till me that they had class at 12.00 in that room & I didn’t say anything. Instead I’ve thought about it so much that if I ever write a campus novel, this would a turning point scene for the protagonist…

I’ve been to see the new Sense & Sensibility. My heart still belongs to the 1995 film which I saw over&over again at the cinema&then on VHS. BUT there’s something delightful about seeing teenage girls come with friends to watch THEIR version. Maybe that’s the delight of repeatedly adapting classics.

When it’s bedtime I say ‘Time for Bedfordshire’. I thought it was a quirk from Bridget Jones but I was surprised to see it in a novel from 1950. Now I’m delighted to find it’s a v old usage from c17th, was popular in the 1930-50s & c19th children were told to ‘climb the wooden hill to Bedfordshire’💤

Today I went to a Mayor of London Loved and Wanted art fair at St Hilda’s East in Shoreditch. It was so lovely because creative work that I’ve been involved in was displayed. I genuinely feel that the zine making & sewing workshops have been a highlight of my career.
A banner made up of various panels and jar show how people connect with st Hilda’s east and its history. A row of zines on a table Text reads

Exploring Belonging at
St Hilda's East
Past and Present
The project began with Lucie Matthews-Jones, a historian from Liverpool John Moore's University, sharing the remarkable 137-year history of St Hilda's East and the surrounding neighbourhood, bringing to life the stories of the many people who have come through our doors in search of connection, opportunity, and belonging. Using archive photographs and historical documents, participants reflected on how the centre has evolved while considering their own place within its continuing story.

Inspired by this history, participants from across St Hilda's East's adult community programmes explored the question of what it means for them to belong at the centre and created a collective portrait of belonging through a tapestry and small zine booklets.

For Lucie, whose research explores the history of settlements and communities, this project addresses an important gap in the historical record. While archives often preserve the perspectives of leaders, organisations, and decision-makers, they rarely capture the lived experiences of the people who use community spaces every day. These artworks are more than a reflection of today's community; they are a lasting historical record. Preserved alongside the stories and archives of St Hilda's East, they will enable future historians, researchers, and community members to understand what belonging meant to the people who shaped this place in the twenty-first century. In one hundred years' time, it is our hope that these voices will continue to tell the story of St Hilda's East through this creative work you see today. Liverpool John Moores University has generously supported and funded this project.A display of a banner, the zine table and a banner with text that reads St. Hilda's East
