If you haven't read this piece on language use in around AI, you definitely should. Great work from @emilymbender.bsky.social , @nannainie.bsky.social and Peter Zukerman, with solutions for what to call things we backoff to just anthropomorphising. firstmonday.org/ojs/index.ph...
Table 3: Suggestions for de-anthropomorphizing language.
Category, Alternative Strategies, Examples.

Cognizer & Products of cognition: Instead of language that locates thinking in an algorithm, describe the algorithm as performing calculations or other algorithmic operations and the people using it doing the thinking. Examples:
artificial intelligence → probabilistic automation

hybrid intelligence → augmented human intelligence

image recognition → image labeling

speech recognition → automatic transcription

the model shows bias → the model reflects bias

model mistakes → model errors

chatbots are good at … → chatbots are good for ….

this graduation speech moment is notable, and her amazed shock at having failed to read the room feels instructive. when you're inside the bubble, you think everybody else is. but everybody isn't.

This has been a super helpful guide by @emilymbender.bsky.social, Peter Zuckerman and @nannainie.bsky.social as I'm editing my thesis. Highly recommend. I low key wish this would be a plug-in that would underline the red flaggy turns of phrases as I'm writing. 😮‍💨 firstmonday.org/ojs/index.ph...

Anthropomorphizing language conceals the limitations of AI, promoting misplaced trust. @emilymbender.bsky.social & @nannainie.bsky.social suggest focusing on a system’s functionalities: instead of saying a model is “good at” something, say what it is “good for." www.techpolicy.press/we-need-to-t...
