I've heard people make claims that AI would lead to a new Renaissance, but I didn't imagine it'd happen like this:
Screenshot of a Tweet from Pope Leo XIV. It reads:

"In this era of artificial intelligence, it is becoming urgen to distinguish human art from what machines produce. There is an ontological difference, even before an aesthetic one, between art and what a machine can generate through statistical calculation based on millions of images created by others. Algorithms lack the spark of humanity. For this reason, the Church wishes to renew an alliance with artists and cultural institutions to safeguard our humanity."

Also: this document and the MIT report resonate because they assert value of the human endeavor vs. efficiency clearly and powerfully. Much more meaningful than policy built around "AI is here to stay" or accusations that concern about AI use means one is "pretending it doesn't exist."
As a community, we need to keep in mind that although research is central to MIT’s mission, it’s more than an end in itself; on our campus, research is also an apprenticeship, a means of training the next generation of researchers to continue our work and drive our fields of inquiry forward. Using research as an opportunity for learning-by-doing may produce seeming “inefficiencies,” but that’s a feature, not a bug.

A focus on our humanity should also alert us to the fact that common current remedies for the problems AI creates can risk damaging the relationships between and among teachers and students. For instance, many instructors recounted that having to “police” unauthorized AI use was harming their connection to students (a dynamic made worse by the fact that, as we learned, AI detection software is quite unreliable). For their part, students fear being wrongly accused of AI cheating and are increasingly frustrated by instructors’ use of AI in areas that demand a human touch, such as grading, assignment creating, and feedback. Such an underground river of mutual suspicion is no foundation for a healthy classroom.

This framing is inaccurate and irresponsible. There is rigorous work being done in the humanities interrogating AI's well-documented harms to students (i.e. cognitive surrender). No one is "ignoring" anything, least of all the rhetoric of inevitability this post contributes to and participates in.

Phones are banned at the Waldorf School of the Peninsula, two miles from Google’s headquarters. “No phones means no distraction, no social media anxiety, and no constant comparison. Just real childhood,” the school explains on its website. Waldorf’s price for a real childhood: as much as $47,500 a year.

Several Waldorf board members are professionally focused on artificial intelligence, but at the school machine learning is minimized in favor of “human learning.” The goal is to train the future elite to think clearly.

“While machines optimize tasks and automate decisions, our graduates develop the uniquely human capacities that will define leadership in 2030 and beyond,” the school says.

Also something cropping up in student research papers esp. when they are encouraged to use AI for "brainstorming" which often translates to asking it where the gaps are without, as these authors note, the genuine engagement.
Why does this happen? Because GenAI models cannot get behind publishers’ firewalls, they retrieve seminal articles that have been uploaded to the internet, combined with reams of recent pre-print and open-access articles, many from predatory journals. Hence, the missing middle: papers that spot-check highly important papers from decades ago and then leap forward to very recent publications without any reference to the deep literature in between. What we have is the surface appearance of a comprehensive survey of relevant scholarship over time, but without genuine engagement with the ramifying lines of inquiry that make up a modern academic discipline.
