One of my students argued that THE THINGS THEY CARRIED is “classic literature.” EXCUSE ME!?!! I beg your finest pardon. That book was published in 1990, which my mind remembers as being very recent.

Voters are already voting in the midterms. This year, some voters are trying something new to get ready for the election: asking AI to help research their ballot and even decide who to vote for.

I did a guest lecture for this organization that brings French sports management students to Chicago to study sports culture. Looking back at the pictures, it was a good hair day for me.
A picture of me, a middle-aged white man with a grey stubbly beard, and black and grey hair, which is perfectly coiffed. I’m wearing a blue and grey plaid-style shirt with the sleeves rolled to the elbow and light colored khaki pants. Over my right shoulder is the Seagull Institute banner, and over my left is the Prezi I used, showing the major, minor and college sports teams in Chicago.

When I was running XC in high school, we ran out of space on the boys bus, so I had to ride with the girls. The team made fun of me, but I got to spend a delightful hour on a bus full of girls. We got to the meet and we were all laughing and hugging, and the error of their thinking was evident.

Today, my professional writing class was considering the calculus a writer needs to make between renting space on a site (like social media) or own their own site. We looked at @gregpak.net’s essay on relaunching his newsletter in 2018.
A screenshot of my lecture/discussion slides with a black and white picture of Pak and two quotes from his article that read:
“But the episode demonstrates what we should always remember: any or all of the sites that we depend so much on could get ruined overnight.

Most importantly, I'm building a list that will survive the collapse of any individual social network or internet service. I'm not at all planning to abandon all the other services I use overnight. Any tool that still works is a tool I'm going to use.But there was a point not too long ago when I was concerned with making sure I was pushing people who had subscribed to my email newsletter to follow me on Twitter. Now I'm realizing I got that exactly backward.”

The Cubs could not have drawn a better match for the first round of the playoffs. The seasons record against the Padres is 5-1, with a +27 run differential--nearly twice as many runs scored by the Cubs as by the Padres. They dominated across the board in every game, including 23-3 blowout in July.

As my 1/2 grade co-ed team was warming up, I heard one of the boys on the opposing team tell his friend that they were sure to win since we had so many girls. So I started my strongest striker, a little blonde girl with a sweet smile, who proceeded to run up the score 5-0 in the first half.

As a life-long Cubs fan, I take great pleasure any time the Sox publicly acknowledge how they were an absolute garbage team there for a bit. Way to not totally blow it there at the end.
A poster for the White Sox showing three players who I can’t be bothered to figure out their names congratulating each other under a sky filled with fireworks. In the top midd portion of the poster, it reads Chicago White Sox: first team in MLB history to make the postseason after two 100+ loss seasons.

Promoting and supporting literacy is part of the remit of most public libraries, but it is just a part. A significant part, but a part of a much larger body of work that public libraries do. A public library is a community hub and resource center, as well as a book depository.

The only animated show is BoJack Horseman? I really liked BoJack Horseman, but no love for Archer? Or Samurai Jack? Primal? Adventure Time? Bob's Burgers? BOB'S BURGERS?!??! Hell, even shows ostensibly for children like Avatar: the Last Airbender and Bluey should probably have been considered.

You can’t be upset about the gas prices when the possibility of global nuclear conflict looms potentially on the horizon. When you are trying to decide what to cut from your budget, remember you could, hypothetically, be dying from the nuclear fall out. Gas prices are pretty small in comparison.

Keegan, you might be thinking, it’s been a while since you shared any haunting art work from your children. Have they moved on to a less distressing aesthetic in their artistic development? I don’t know, hypothetical reader. You tell me:

A Nate Beeler cartoon in which Trump stands next to a sign that reads “The Newest Trump Tower”. Next to that is a massive collection of word balloons reading “Any moment now, Trump will implode.” Nine balloons stretch up and out of the panel. On the opposite side of this tower of word balloons is an elephant in a blue suit looking annoyed.

One of my students was writing about which communities he belonged to, and he mentioned "The PC Master Race." @yahtzeecroshaw.bsky.social coined that phrase so long ago now, but it's still finding cultural value.

If the current playoff picture holds, the White Sox could find themselves on the way to the AL Championship Series, but the odds are low they make it past any one of the three AL East teams they'd have to play. The Cubs have a harder road to the World Series, needing to go through Phi, Mil and LA.

The issue of homework I find quite difficult. There is only so much that a person can achieve in the three contact hours that I share with the students. They need time to turn theory into practice. They need time to read, write and think, and homework can give valuable structure to these activities.

The printing press is a particularly strained analogy, since, to my mind, no one ever harmed themselves or others because the printing press told them to. The “AI is a tool” argument only works if the other tools in the comparison can engage *with* the user.

The reason that the Harry Potter apologists won't just read better books is because they're not looking for good stories...if they were, they wouldn't have glommed on to Harry Potter. They're looking for the camaraderie and social phenomenon that Harry Potter was in the 2000s.

My daughter’s dance troop performed at the half-time show of a local high school football game, and I watch a young player try to rip the helmet off the opposing QB when he broke out of the pocket. I wonder in what ways this was “good and pure” (in Ben Sasse’s terms).

This is hardly the most relevant part of the story, but the number of regulators shrunk so much that style guide for the Minnesota Reformer portrays those numbers differently. It went from numbers to words. It was so small it made sense to write the number out rather than use the numerical grapemes.

I like to imagine that when Genndy Tartakovsky went into HBO to pitch Primal, he went in with a Samuri Jack box set and this image from the pilot. I would hope that the execs then threw money at him.
The final shot from episode one of Primal showing Spear, a caveman in a loincloth, riding his new pet dinosaur, a blue Tyrannosaurus-like bipedal animal. The dinosaur is rearing back with mouth wide in a loud roar and Spear is defiantly hoisting his spear above his head. The background is red and pink, with the sky read and the foam of a crashing wave in pink.
