I have a fix for the MLB playoff system, but it involves severely punishing wild card teams and ensuring all other rounds are best of 7, things the league probably doesn’t want to do because those things are good and smart and baseball-centric.

I made room for two more here by leaving off The Wire and 30 Rock, which transcend the exercise; those are my two best, easily. Wasn't shocked but still sad to see RECTIFY not only miss the list but, as far as I can tell, not be named on a single ballot. For shame!

On a walk this morning, my kid and I watched from the sidewalk as an unmarked car cut off a driver, another unmarked car behind, three masked ICE agents got out, removed the driver from his car and put him in theirs, left his car on the side of the road. As if nothing had happened in five minutes.

the experience of COVID really drove this home for me. It wans't the apocalypse, life went on, but a million people died and there were enormous social costs, some of which continue to this day and then when it was done most people were like "let's never think about that again"

One of my favorite moments in Iceland was when a tour guide pointed out the van window, to what looked like an elementary school, and said, “That’s our prison.” I followed up to make sure the singular wasn’t a mistake, and he said it wasn’t.

My collection of media from back then. The more time passes, the stranger it seems to have been in the city that day. I hadn’t looked at these since, and flipping through, I remembered the general tone pretty well. 25 years is a stretch of time, but I do think our moment’s roots are still there.
